Why, when playing as the English, can i make the trip across the channel to northern France without a port, but cannot make the relatively short hop to Ireland (which i cannot see either, despite being able to see most of Europe)?
Thanks in advance

Well from england to france there is a so called 'sea-crossing' which allows you to cross the sea WITHOUT ships. There are a few of these crossings on the map, BUT NOT between england and ireland. So you need to follow the normal way to invade such island. Make sure you have a port/harbour from the place you want to start your invasion (where your army is), and then a line of ships to ireland, uninteruptable, AND NOT BLOCKED by enemy ships (which can be seen in the help popup tip for each sea region), then you can just drop your army in ireland. Mind you to leave it again you first need to buid a port obvious.
Hope this is clear and if it is not you might want to try the search function on this board since this information has been given a lot already........

there is also a mod which 'unhooks' flanders from wessex and some of the other islands. these islands then function as true islands, like ireland already does. go to the mods forum to find more data on this mod or how to mod your own campaign in a similar fashion. and, you could also mod in ireland to be like the other 'wading' crossings, if you so wanted.
