Thread: Lack of Roman regional troops

Default Lack of Roman regional troops

Does anyone else think it is rather odd that most other factions generally have access to more regional troops than the Romans? After all Rome has much more of a history in recruiting auxiliaries than almost any other other faction in the game. For example historically Rome recruited Belgae cavalry to their auxiliary regiments for hundreds of years but in EB they are not able to recruit them at all.

Another example is the historical recruitment of Illyrians, but in the game they only have access to 3 units from Illyria. The only justification I can think of is the fact that historically most of these units were only recruited after the timeframe in EB.

Do they? I don't think so. The regional pool is more or less the same for all factions, with slight differences.

For example historically Rome recruited Belgae cavalry to their auxiliary regiments for hundreds of years but in EB they are not able to recruit them at all.
The missing regional cavalry in regions where the Romans can (later, muuuuuch later) recruite factional "locals" is in fact a problem that needs to be solved.

Another example is the historical recruitment of Illyrians, but in the game they only have access to 3 units from Illyria. The only justification I can think of is the fact that historically most of these units were only recruited after the timeframe in EB.
There are just three Illyrian units in the game at all. Even the Epeirote don't get more out of those people.

I think there are a bit more than slight differences.

Well I actually think it is a cool feature, but there are pretty significant differences in the regional troops that each faction can recruit, if you look at the recruitment guide you can see.

Unfortuantly not. May be you are comparing what the Romans can get by local MICs in specific province with what other factions get by factional MICs in that province?

You should compare what the Romans can get by local MICs with what other factions that are as far away as the Romans can get by local MICs in that province. For example compare what the Romans can get in Scotland with what the Greeks can get there, or compare the Roman abilities in Persis with that of the Sweboz in the same province. You'll see that there is a basic pool of locals that everyone (nearly) has accesses to.

I was actually referring to instances where both factions are using regional MIC. For example the romans can only recruit 3 thracian units while others factions (not the Getai since they would be using factional MICs) can recruit quite a number more.

What other factions can recruit which Thracian units from local MICs that the Romans can not recruit appart from the Thracian Hippeis, that have factional slot for the Romans?

EDIT: The Romans can only recruit 2 Thrakian units from local MICs:

    Thraikioi Doryphoroi
    Thraikioi Rhomphaiaphoroi

    The other Thrakian units are:

Thraikioi Hippeis [The Romans have their own]
Thraikioi Prodromoi [only available by factional MIC]
Thraikioi Peltastai [only available by factional MIC]

I don't know whether there is a justification(it's EB so of course there is), but I to miss the regional units, in particular, the Italics. Because on EB you can only recruit some samnites, where on RTR, you can recurit a whole bunch of Italic troops. This isn't a criticism, but why were they not included?

    Unit limit.

    'Nuff said

    ----------------

In RTW, there is a certain unit limit for everyone faction (I believe it was around 50 or something), so they can't include that much. Also, RTR doesn't have the Epeiros, Casse, Arverni and Saka factions, and the map is a bit smaller.

While I'm no EB developer, I know that to include all those units (if I remember correctly RTR has hastati, principes, and triarii for Samnium, Picenum, and Etruria) would take up 9 unit slots that could be used elsewhere. Additionally, that degree of diversity is out of place for such a small area (e.g., the Italian peninsula).

Also, think about the costs and benefits. By adding diversity to the early roman republican armies, you lose diversity somewhere else. And, selfishly, because I usually play as Pontos, I like a lot of diversity in the Seleukid, Ptolemaioi, Makedonian, Greek, Epeirot, Getai, Sauromatae, and Hayasdan armies.

Darn, it kinda seems like every problem besides a few bugs comes down to RTW hardcoding. Theoretically if RTW releases its coding or something is it possible that all of these restrictions will be lifted or are they always going to be here?

Developers choice, so to say. The entire Imperial line up for the Romans could be cut out, for example, to free slots for early Italian regionals, because hardly any player will ever reach the Imperial periode in his campaing.

But there are more urgent issues, like regions where the majority of the factions can recruite absoutly nothing.

I try to avoid such places.

I will agree with the points mad about plain old RTR not having Epirus, etc.., but if you play the huge amount of mods based on it or RTR PE, many have all those Italics, and Epirus and a British faction. However, I think that EB has a better spread of troops from everywhere, but i personally like the idea of more Roman relevant units(yes, I love Rome).
