    Smile **THE EB DOCUMENTARY THEATER**

    Hello, EB Players.

(I noticed there is a *THE EB TAVERN* thread by Bootsiuv, where we can get to know each other.)

I thought it will be nice to have a thread where we can watch many interesting History Channel Documentary/National Geographic Documentary series and freely share our thoughts.

Here are the Documentaries that i want to share through THE EB THEATER.

ENJOY! (Promote me to member! haha)

    History Channel Documentary Series

    The Ancient Warriors Series
This Ancient Warriors series from the Discovery Channel is an excellent look at the warrior groups and armies that shaped history.

Each half-hour episode looks at a major fighting people or force and charts the reasons for their rise to dominance and subsequent fall.

The warriors highlighted are: The Assyrians, Celts, Normans, Legions of Rome, Macedonians, Soldiers of the Pharaoh, Spartans, Janissaries, Huns, Knights Templar, Vikings, Highlanders, Irish Warriors, Maurya Warriors of the Elephant, Aztecs, Samurai, Shaolin Monks, Hawaiians, Ninja, Sioux.

There are 20 episodes and almost all include re-enactors hacking and slashing at each other with great abandon. Some are better than others but, overall, the series is first-rate.

The scripting is good, filled with interesting detail, and each programme follows one soldier and his life in the army. Not all of them end happily, it has to be said.

People who are interested in warfare throughout the ages - or the specific warrior groups themselves - will appreciate this series.

i watched the barbarians series (its uploaded on poppers list, google it his has 5-6 more episides are they are all full episodes on guba, stage6, googlevid etc)

i thought the content was actually fairly good, but the guy they get to do the narration is laughable. he sounds like some second rate guy who does the voiceover for movie trailers. maybe americans dont notice this as much, but for my english sensibilities the series would have been vastly improved with a more intelligent sounding narrator. essentially his voice sounds so ridiculous that it takes away from what he is saying, it makes it seem cheep, and probably comes across as less well researched than it actually is.

Question Re: **THE EB DOCUMENTARY THEATER**

After watching Engineering an Empire - Byzantine Empire, I was wondering.

If Byzantine Empire was directly originated from Eastern Roman Empire, then did they keep any kind of Legion system, at least for another 100 years after Western Roman Empire fell? or Did they use a whole different military system?

Wow really? The narration is half the reason I like the show as much as I do, but that may be because I would know Clancy Brown's voice anywhere I hear it. I have loved his V.O. going all the way from Superman:The Animated Series thru to JLU (he was Lex Luthor), so that may bias me (fun fact he was The Kurgan in Highlander).
All right, but apart from the sanitation, the medicine, education, wine, public order, irrigation, roads, a fresh water system, and public health, what have the Romans ever done for us?

I agree that he has a concise and projective voice although I can understand where you're coming from with the "movie narration." But I don't find it to be an exaggerated voice, just a good quality firm voice.

I've seen most of those (I used to live of the History channel).

Part of the reason I got into the TW series was because I'm a big history nerd, so this thread is kind of completing the circle
'Only the Dead Have Seen the End of War' Plato

    'Ar nDuctas' O'Dougherty clan motto

'In Peace, sons bury thier fathers; In War, fathers bury thier sons' Thucydides

'Forth Eorlingas!' motto of the Riders of Rohan

'dammit, In for a Penny, In for a Pound!' the Duke of Wellington

I do like the excellent repro armour the Spartans are wearing in that series, I contacted Legion XIV, who are mentioned at the end credits, about the cost of a helmet, and was quoted approax £600 for a helmet, and that was a few years ago.
All other repro I have seen doesn't look anywhere near as good.

I read a lot of other books about Spartans and their equipment.
£600 is surely expensive at that time.

I think it was possible to equip Spartans with expensive equipment because Spartans (who actually fight in battle) had small number and a lot of them owned lands, or estates.

And as far as i know, as Sparta and its power declined while Rome was rising, Spartan equipment also got cheaper and dropped its quality.

    The Highlanders series...Duh!!
The outfit seems Jacobite to me... These are not Scots - highlanders especially - of the 1300s...

That's the only one I've seen so far...

Depends on the period... Up until the collapse of the thematic system rank and file infantry was the mainstay of the Byzantine army.
Before the failure of this system, of course cavalry was awesome but things were focused around infantry... Of course if you look to the later armies - after the 13th century and up until the fall infantry was simply not worth to mention at all...

Don't forget...when you refer to legions keep in mind that they were reformed many times. The legions of Marius and Constantine were different... Byzantium just continued to evolve its armies (up to a certain point of course...then... ) although during medieval times it did not resemble that much to roman legions.

Walk through the narrow streets of ancient Greece and Carthage and follow the massive expansion of the Roman and Chinese Empires.
