Hmm, my general is always in the middle. Which is ridiculous IMO if the bodyguard consists of cavalry--I want to use it to flank! But you should always create your own formation, the generic ones are rarely practical.

Yes it is hardcoded, but I haven't found it inhibiting my generals fighting abilities.

I think he was referring to the formation of the bodyguard unit.
I think he is out there to have a good view on the battlefield so that he can give orders.
