    Question Hoplite Question

    Damn, I love this game.

Anyways, concerning my curiosity: Why is it that all the different types of hoplites(levy, classical, massilians, indo-greeks, etc.) all have different formations? In other words, why are the Classical Hoplites in such a tight formation, when the levies are in a slightly looser formation, and the massilians/indo-greeks in an even more looser formation?

I don't mean to insult this great mod or any of its creators in any way. This is merely curiosity. Thx in advance.

Classical hoplites, cause thats how they fought, in dense formations.

Levies, IDK really, but I would guess cause they haveless disipline/training, so they don't assume such a dense formation.

Massilains because they have adopted many cletic styles, including the longsword, which requires a looser formation to wield.

Indo greeks, IDK but all elites tend to be fairly loose, I would guess this is to cover the maximum ground with their lower numbers.

    Question Re: Hoplite Question

Yeah, I found the loose formations of the elites to be... I dunno, I find it annoying, I guess. I checked the text files, and noticed the epilektoi and spartiatai are just a tiny bit looser than the classicals. Maybe an EB member can enlighten me on this matter?

Thx for the info about the Massilians.

It doesn't matter once they're engaged anyways, they all break formation and fight like rabble. (unless you have my mod of course)

With regards to elites an some other units... when you press "C" for loose formation they form a tight formation. This is true for many Germanic units, and Soldurus.

    Question Re: Hoplite Question

WOW. I just installed TW fanatic's minimod, and I'm throughly impressed. My first hoplite custom battle between Koinon Hellenon and Saka Rauka was sooooo AWESOME. It was exactly how I would imagine a shieldwall formation like the old phalanx would look like in a battle. This custom battle was pretty long for such a small number of troops, and it was gorgeous.

Anyways, I played around with the files a bit, and made the hypaspitai, baktrian agema, indo-hellenic hoplites, massilians, etc with spears as their primary, no swords, and gave them whatever needed to be given to make them the same as the hoplites are in TW fanatic's mod.

So a question for TW Fanatic or anyone capable of answering it: I noticed that the Indo-Hellenic Royal Guards animation looks as if they're using swords as their primary weapons, and not overhand spears. Noting that I'm a noob modder, how would I make the animation into an overhand spear animation?

Thx, and sorry for bringing up this dead thread.

EDIT: I think I hijacked my own thread...

    Glad you're enjoying it!

Regarding the Royal Guards: In the EDU file, replace their primary weapon (sword) with their secondary weapon (spear), replacing the secondary weapon with nothing (give them none). Give the primary weapon (now spear) the short_pike attribute. They will no longer have short swords, but will fight like all the other hoplites in a hoplite phalanx.

I think you also have to switch the spear and sword animations around in the DMB file, though you may be able to just delete the sword animation and make the spear animation primary.
