Sinan you MUST try and watch I Claudius. Utterly, utterly brilliant, and without all the high-budget FX of Rome - its all about the characterisations and the acting (which is first class btw with a host of soon to be famous actors - Brian Blessed, Derek Jacobi, John Hurt, Patrick Stewart....)

And whilst we're on the subject, you also need to read the First Man in Rome series by Colleen McCullogh, probly the best and most accurate (within literary license) historical fiction I've ever read.
"I request permanent reassignment to the Gallic frontier. Nay, I demand reassignment. Perhaps it is improper to say so, but I refuse to fight against the Greeks or Macedonians any more. Give my command to another, for I cannot, I will not, lead an army into battle against a civilized nation so long as the Gauls survive. I am not the young man I once was, but I swear before Jupiter Optimus Maximus that I shall see a world without Gauls before I take my final breath."

These are great fun indeed, writer is actually a historian, he knows what he's talking about.

Rome was excellent fun, but it's officially dead; no season 3 or 4. There was talk of an HBO movie, but as with Deadwood I'm pretty sure that idea is buried now. The actors have moved on.

The first season was great and then I was iffy on the second season all the way up to Cassius' death. That was perfection, sold me on the whole arc.

I need to watch I, Claudius again!

Nice fan video but I cannot stand the pop musicalized version of that song. I much prefer the orchestral version used in the game.

Watching that clip only reminded me how much I miss the Rome series. It really is tragic that HBO butchered the second season by cutting it short. The last few episodes were lacking, especially the final one which felt more like a "Zomgwehavetowrapeverythingupinthelast15to20minutes!" affair than a proper finale.

But Rome really cannot compare to I, Claudius. Rome was a noble attempt at a period drama that was unnecessarily sensationalized and sexualized for plebeian consumption. On the other hand I, Claudius felt like a classic of the modern electronic age from start to finish ... which it is.

She knows what's she's talking about. Colleen McCullogh is a woman. In Irish/Gaelic Colleen means girl...

The nice thing about the two series is how they dovetail so neatly. Rome leaves off just about where I, Claudius starts. Having just seen a repeat of I, Claudius, it was fun to see Octavian, Agrippa, Livia etc in their youthful forms in Rome. You could almost regard Rome as a prequel. Some of the acting and writing in it was so good, it matched that in I, Claudius - Rome's Caesar and Antony, for example, would not have been out of place in I, Claudius.

Rome will face a challenge if it tries to continue into I, Claudius's timeframe. I think it might suffer from the comparison.
