    Default Iberians in Asia

Im posting this question in the Eb forum because I found the link which raised my question from the thread "Antiochos the Great". One of the replies was to a link, to Appian's Roman History, which talked of the Syrian Wars and also of the Mithridatic wars (sp?). On page 21 in the Mithridatic Wars section was a mention of Iberians in Asia. There is little talk of these Iberians except to say there is speculation as to whether the European Iberians migrated to Asia, vice versa, or that it is just a coincidence.
Does anyone have anymore information regarding these Iberians in Asia and if their connection to the European Iberians exists?

I dont remember who posted the link in the other thread but thank you very much this is a fascinating read

The name must have confused you, and indeed it is not hard to see why: two different peoples who are given the same name. The Iberians this link of yours is about are a people living to the north of the Hai. If you conquer the settlement of Mtskheta as an Hellenistic faction (and possibly certain other factions as well) your conquering general (need to have a general in the conquering stack) will receive the periergsis iberias trait. That comes with a description of those 'Iberians'.

And no, to my knowledge they have absolutely nothing to do with the Iberians from the Iberian penninsula.

Indeed, I've never seen any speculation that they are related to the people of the Iberian peninsula.

You may also notice that there is another Albania over there, too.

Basque nationalists/sympathizers have tried to link the two Iberias but AFAIK no serious scientific links between the languages or anything else have been concluded.

Maybe the name "Iberians" comes from ib-ri (sumerian word), which is the "ancestor" of "Hebraeans" (looks strange to me. Is this really the correct word in english language? )

Would explain how two different peoples get the same name. Sumerian culture was spread all around the world, to India, to the south of Afrika and of course to the Phoenicians, who traded with Iberian Peninsula and even Cornwall (they called it "the Tin Isles", iirc) also.

The Albanians (Ard-Âlân of early Sassanian times, Aghvank in Armenian) do not exist as an ethnical entity anymore in any formal sense; Ever since Turkic invasions have permanently rebalanced the entire Caucasus, the Albanians who were partly of Armenian and Iranian cultural spheres, had previously been affected by the Alannic migrations (After the Black Hun invasion of Attila, which almost lead to a purge of Iranic nomads in the Pontic Steppes). The Alans do exist today, however as Îrôn of Ossetia, and live in enclaves here and there throughout the Caucasus. Culturally and ethnically, they differ from the ethnic natives of Colchis (Lazica/Lâzistân/Machelonia) and Caucasian Iberia (Kartli). Georgians of today claim their heritage from these enigmatic civilizations.

Of course, the issue is not free from controversy and revisionism; To the contrary, the dispute between Georgians and "Abkhazians" gives it another dimension, and it is not endearing to pan-nationalists who generally rouse support to the Chechnyans. The Albanians of Europe however claim themselves to be descended from Illyrians. It is a mere coincidence that the historical Albanians of Caucasia share their name with modern Albania.

I wonder if it has any connection with the Kurdish clan "Erdalān".

The Hebrews would be the correct word in English, but it might be used a little less often than in the German or Scandinavian languages (the Hebrews in Danish: Hebræerne, in German: Die Hebräer/Das Hebräische Volk, or something like that?).

funny indeed, cause I've heard quite the opposite from georgians I know. They told me it was their historians who were trying to establish a link

my mate's missus is ossetian. She is a linguist and she hates Herodotus cause old man did not bother to mention all of their ancient deityes in his essay, can you imagine that
...who generally rouse support to the Chechnyans.
Finally! I can correct the great allknowing Persian Cataphract
plural would be not Chechnyans but Chechentzi or Nokhchii (singular Chechenetz/Nokhchuo)
    Best regards

Curses! I have been corrected by an obese, bald Roman

I don't suppose it's rude to ask, but could you give your esteemed wife a heads-up about our humble project, and have a look at our work for the Sauromataë

I'd appreciate that a lot, MiniMe. Ossetians, especially linguists are some of the persons we could find an immense use for, and we'd be honoured to have some sort of a guest member who could provide a few insights on the works of the Îrôn language, which is the very stock we have used to reconstruct the Sauromataë language.

Send her my most sincere regards

Perhaps this could kickstart work on a voicemod for the Sauromatae, which would insanely cool.

    Missing link: be.

Anyhow, yes that would be great. Also she may be able to improve the current translations.
