    Talking IE 7: Firefox Clone

    .
Have you seen it? Bro is an IE-ophille (actually whatever-I-prefer-ophobe ) and I've had a chance to take a quick look at it. Tabbed browsing etc... I doubt they paid anything for the technology (supposing it's patented) to Mozilla Foundation or that there's much more beneath the glamorous make-up.

Too bad for them it's a poor clone. Firefox is still far superior.

Since Opera invented tabbed browsing they should pay Opera and in that case, I hope the Mozilla foundation did that as well.
That said, almost any browser is superior to IE.

Your memory is sharper than mine Husar-san. As a matter of fact, I was using Opera back then.

Opera didn't invent it. Several other obscure browsers had it before that.

One of the Opera-founders inherited a patent from 1922 for tabbed (analog) browsing. Opera and Mozilla had an agreement about the use of the patent, but Microsoft sued and was granted the "tabbed browsing" patent for browsers in 2004.

Imo, software patents like this or the "double-click" hinder development and are counterproductive.

You learn something new every day. Though there are browsers going back to the mid 90's that had tabbed browsing such as NetCaptor (an IE front end).

It's true. Here's a picture of the Web, circa 1922:

If a user held multiple files in his had, he could "tab" through them by grabbing the tabs on the manilla folders. It all got patented by Disney.

They had tabbed abacuses back then ?!

Ahhh, that explains why the patent is still alive after 80+ years!

Sorry for the incomplete information. Yes, 1922 sounds strange indeed. Here's a pic of the principle of the old patent:

The patent is about a principle of order as developed by one Robert Russel.
Now, 70 years later this was merged with another patent of one Solomon Katz, who is the father of one of the Opera developers.
