Default When will I get reformed phalanxes

I´m playing with Macedonia and right now I´m at year 190 BC. I still haven´t gotten any reformed heavy phalanxes yet. I don´t know what the requirements are to get them though. Are there any special buildings I need to build? Any special settlements I need to conquer? I have conquered all of Greece and the balkans as well as asia minor.

AFAIK you need the highest MIC and a city in italy becoming a huge city (not counting rome)

Also, do you need to upgrade your MIC before you can recruit those? And is there a message that informs that "changes have happened ...."

Out of curiosity does Rome still need to be active, or is a city in Italy hitting the required size enough regardless of faction?

I ask because Epeiros has Rome on the ropes in my game [It went from just holding Taras with only a handful of troops to pushing the Romans back taking every city in southern Italy up to and including Rome itself, forcing them to make peace...] so if my shiny new troops depend on their survival Ill be needing to get involved shortly.

No, faction and wars are unimportant, except for the consideration that they slow growth down a bit.

You don't need to capture the city...

I learned about the Macedonian reforms the "hard way". Playing as Rome, I spent about 60 years locked in a war with Carthage. After I took them out, I set my sites on Macedonia. Unfortunately, I found out too late that they controlled all of Greece, Illyria, Thrace, most of Dacia, and they were even spilling into Asia Minor.

The first time I saw the reformed phalanx there were about 10 of them, all with at least 2 silver chevrons, along with plenty of heavy cavalry against a few of my Polybian units and my Samnite allies... I got slaughtered.

I had to recall my legions from Iberia and raise more to combat the Macedonian threat. At least there will be ample opportunities for triumphs.

I'm at 215 BC and Ariminum has become a huge city, but I'm not seeing the reform. Can't quite remember what year the Marian event is enabled to trigger, but I'm pretty sure it was before 200. Pretty annoying if I won't get my new phalanx. Oh, I'm playing this game with BI.exe - could that be a problem?

RTW, 167 BC: Rome expels Greek philosophers after the Lex Fannia law is passed. This bans the effete and nasty Greek practice of 'philosophy' in favour of more manly, properly Roman pursuits that don't involve quite so much thinking.

No, I play with BI and I always get the trigger. It's called "The March of Time."

In my current campaign, the message window didn't pop up. So, just like many RTW event messages, it can happen without telling you. The new Mak phalanx is just like the Pezhetairoi but has 1 more armor and has a larger recruitment area in Greece. They require one more level of factional MIC than the regulart Pezhetairoi. If you have the MIC level, no upgrade is required like that of the Romani reforms.

The only requirement is a city with the hidden_resource 'italy' gets to the huge_city level. These cities are Arriminum, Arretium, Arpi, and Capua. You can go into the desrc_regions.txt and add the 'italy' hidden_resource to different towns to trigger the reform, but you'll have to delete the map.rwm. (Also, I think reaching the huge_city level triggers the event, not being at the huge_city level.)

You could add_population to said cities if due to war etc they don't look like they are getting there anytime soon. But this does spoil gameplay and speeds up things that shouldn't be happening yet, so use only in dire need.

I thought the script made it so AI factions don't lose population when they create/retrain units?

I'm not sure what you mean by this, but it might be the key to my problem. I was curious to read the description for the reformed phalanxes, so I started a campaign as Makedonia and used console commands to capture Capua and turn it into a huge city. Even after several turns and with every structure built in Pella, I didn't get any reformed phalanxes.

I assumed he was referring to cities getting sacked. Also, I haven't looked at it in weeks, but IIRC the script doesn't always completely replenish the population loss.
