    Default Hello all!

    Hello everyone.

I've posted on maybe one or two topics but mostly have been reading all the guides for Medieval II ever since I picked it up back in the beginning of the year.

As this is an introduction I'll go ahead and throw my Total War experiences out there:

    Shogun Total War ~2000

My college roommate loved it and brought it to college with him. At the time I was reeling from a civil war real time battle game I had purchased some time back (I was 14) and found confusing and boring. Sadly I lumped this title into the same bin as I was more interested in the likes of Diablo II and Silent Hunter II at the time.

I'm also an avid fan of the Silent Hunter series and frequent subsim.com quite often.

    Medieval Total War ~2004
Came highly recommended by a co-worker I was interning with. Sadly I never picked this title up or played it for the same reason discussed above.

    Rome Total War ~2005
I was a fan of the Impressions Isometric city building games Caesar II & III, and Pharaoh, and the Roman time period interested me alot at the time. I picked this bad boy up and it tore me away from World of Warcraft, and alot of my graduate studies at the time. My GPA would have been considerably higher that last year had I not purchased this title, due to the one more turn syndrome. Many a late night of too many cigarettes, a mountain of beer cans, a glass of whiskey, and voicemails from the girlfriend resulted. I favored long campaigns and played all of the Roman factions and then began campaigns with all the playable factions.

    Barbarian Invasion ~2005
Picked this up on one of my post work trip visits to Best Buy. I travel frequently in my career and Best Buy is camped out between me and the airport. Failed miserably with the WRE. Had some success as the Sassanids, ERE, Huns and Vandals. Didn't try anyone else.

    Alexander ~2007
Bought it as a Rome total pack on Steam because I had lost my cd's at this point. Have yet to play it.

    Medieval II plus Kingdoms ~2007
Picked it up around January 2007. Didn't know it was coming either. Was pleasantly surprised. I was part of the community of Direct2Drive consumers that did not have a 1.2 patch a full 90 days after it was released. Shelved the game at that time. Later on picked it up off Steam with Kingdoms 1.2 and 1.3 patches. Been loving it ever since. Use the Retrofit and Unit mods. I've been eyeing Stainless Steel, The Long Road, Large Map and Darthmod as eventual additions. I found the plea for a patch to be all to familiar due to my experiences with Ubisoft on Silent Hunter III and IV.

    That's it for introductions...

    And a newbie question

As far as experience in RTW and MTW2 is it better to take an experienced unit back and retrain it, or refit it with a less experienced unit in the field? I assumed the latter, but am pretty sure that I was wrong. Heck, I didn't even know one could do the latter until a few months ago....that's what drinking heavily while one plays gets you (that and a load up the next day leaves one clueless as to what was going on the night prior).

    Any help is always appreciated.

Generally, in R:TW at least, it is in a way "better" to retrain. This is due to what seems to be a bug - retrained units retain their old experience when retrained - it's not nuteralised by the newer recruits as it is through merges.

Welcome nafod to the tw.org forums.
In RTW, as Omanes said before, units retrained have the same experience as the units who are retrained. I managed to have 2 equites with 9 exp, retrained 'em, and they still have 9 exp!

    Hello nafod!

I find retraining to be particularly useful when it comes to quickly replace your losses. You can bring as many low-manpower units up to full strength in a single turn as you can fit in the recruitment queue. Merging them and recruiting new units one at a time to replenish the army would take much longer. When you are on a timetable (senate mission), that can be decisive.

By the way, I am talking only about Rome. I believe it worked differently in Shogun, but I have not played that game in while.

    Nafod,
Retrain when you have the time. Sending troops home during a offensive campaign means good logistics and takes a lot of time so I rarely ever do that. In that case I´d rather tuck away units that are down below 10 soldiers and retrain them when the campaign is over.

Welcome to the Org, Bashi Kono!

If you have the original Shogun, make sure to download and install the 1.12 patch. If you have Shogun Warlord Edition or the Gold Edition from Total War Eras, though, no patch is necessary.
