Sarkozy is not known for his refined manners and taste. Quite the contrary. That he likes Disney is no surprise.

Before anybody makes the mistake of thinking that this is all normal, at least, conventional, French behaviour, it totally isn't. This is a complete breach with accepted French norms. Normal is a president who is married and has some affaires or extra-marital children on the side. This will not be reported upon by the French press. It will be public knowledge of course, through word-of-mouth or the Swiss or Belgian press, but it will still be kept very discrete.

By contrast, Sarkozy, in his usual provocative style, goes off to Disneyland, where there are 20.000 other people. And some friendly reporters that he himself had tipped beforehand. It's not the first time that he actively makes his affaires and private life public. It is considered very tasteless, a scandal. He is scorned for Americanising French politics in this way. For undermining the dignity of Frecnh politics.

Personally, I am too much of a sensationalist to mind really.

Quite well. Negotiations are still being conducted. Officialy, the strikes are now called open-ended by the unions, but it's mostly quiet. Occasionally there is talk of renewed strikes, but little has come off it. Sarkozy will win it, and the unions know it. Public opinion is not with the unions.
