    Default Positioning Troops

    Hey Guys,
I've just started on RTW and loving it...but I need a little

How do you make your troops face a certain direction? ...rough diagram time

    Enemy: _ _ _ _ _ _ : Their units advance on me in a nice straight line

    Me: / / \ _ - \ / : My units facing all different directions

On most RTS you generally select a unit, left click to where you want them to go, hold the left click down and point them in the right direction

I cant get my boys to line up all nice... someone point me in the right direction please

    Thanks :D

I usually use the right-click and drag-mouse formation trick to get them to line up., i.e. select your units, right click on the map and drag the mouse. You'll see a line of pink dotted squares and stuff representing your unit formation after they get there. They'll start moving after you release the right mouse button.

Or align my line of sight in the direction that I want my troops facing and then move them.

I am sure there are easier methods, but I am not the kind that follows or pays attention to many tutorial tips.

    Hope this helps.

The right click and drag is the best method probably but don't forget the alt key. If you have a formation that you like (use R-click and drag to set your formation during battle prep) then you can hold alt then hold down your right mouse button and rotate whatever units you have selected to face a certain direction.

Also, holding down Alt while R-clicking will cause the units to maintain their current facing upon reaching their new location. I believe the alt commands were added in a patch so make sure you are playing the most recent patch.

A quick note on grouping units. Do not group units until after you have a formation you like. Grouped units will always try to maintain the spacing and facing they had when they were originally grouped. This is a wonderful help in reforming your army but takes some getting used to.
Something to do when bored: estimate the total amount of bandwidth and memory that is wasted by sigs.

You probably don't need to be reminded, but,

    1. right-click and drag from left to right faces troops away from you, drag from right to left and they'll face to the rear.

    2. Hold down the space bar when you order a move and you'll see where and what formation the troops will arrive at/in.

    3. If you give orders to ALL the troops available, as a single group, and some are reinforcing from a distant area, you'll get some badly skewed formations.

    4. Using either of the , (comma) and . (period) keys changes the facing for whole formation. Best to do this while pressing the space bar to see.
