War is brewing. The venerable Aleksios Komnenos, first of the line of the Komnenoi Emperors of Byzantium, is growing old and soon the throne will pass to his eldest son, Ioannis. Under Aleksios, Byzantium regained much of its lost glory. The Balkans were completely secured, the Turks were driven back in Anatolia, and much of the Levant and Egypt have been reclaimed by Crusaders both Catholic and Orthodox. Yet this prosperity has not alleviated the problems within Byzantium itself.
Caesar Ioannis Komenenos is determined to assert absolute Imperial authority over the entire Empire. In his way stands the Order of St. John, a House of Orthodox Crusaders, led by the great Makedonios Ksanthopoulos who holds the mighty office of Megas Logothetes. The Empire is vast and prosperous, but it stands on a knife-edge, and open warfare may break out at any time between the Caesar's allies and those of Megas Ksanthopoulos. If it does, this conflagration will rock the Empire to its core and determine the course of history for many years to come.
