    Default Bad News

I recently could not sleep well, Im in post operation. I turned on the TV, and its 9 am here. I recently started to watch CNN and I discovered an earthquake had attacked in NZ. I'm afraid one of our members, Hepcat, lives there. I'm not sure if he lives near the earthquake zone, but Ihope he will be fine.

Hepcat lives in Rotorua. The earthquake's epicenter was offshore, so nobody was sitting on top of it. The quake was felt throughout the whole north island but it seems that only a few people have minor injuries. Kiwis are used to it and I don't think you need to worry.

IIRC Hepcat lives in Auckland in the north, next to the Rangitoto island which is a big volcano, the earthquake was in the south of NZ so I guess and hope he's fine.

Husar, I think you're mixing things up.
His profile says Rotorua but he did post in the backroom about the fake Rangitoto island volcano eruption which is near Auckland.
BTW, he was online 10 hours ago.

Oh come on, he's probably alright. He'll be online and posting before you know it.

Aww, you're right, it's Rotorua(been thinking Auckland was wrong, thus "IIRC" ).

It's also inside a volcano, not next to one.
Still on the northern island though.

The earthquake was just of the coast at Gibourne. A 6.8 on the richter scale so not just a wobble - but not a huge devastating one.

"Gissie" is a wee bit away from Roto-vegas (where Hepcat lives) . Also there have been no reports of any sinificant INJURIES let alone fatalities.

I am sure Hepcat will be fine. I was playing RTW at the time and did not even feel it! Granted I was in Wellington but they did feel it alot further south.

These things happen here but thankfully this close to xmas no one was hurt (badly).

oops, I just noticed this topic.

No cause for alarm. I did feel the earthquake when it went, the computer desk was swaying for 30 seconds but other than that nothing too interesting. Here in NZ earthquakes are a fact of life and we have good systems in place to deal with them, I read in the paper that shops in Gisbourne had already started opening again the day before Christmas and were advertising "Shakedown Sales".

As to why I haven't been posting for the last week or so, it's because I just haven't really felt up to it. I went to the .Org, read one or two topics then left again because I just could concentrate on one thing at once and would have about 12 tabs open on Firefox with 5 applications running as well. Also because I've been working 8 hours almost every day and having to get out of bed at 6am when I am an insomiac and can't get to sleep to begin with exhausted me too. I didn't actually think the earthquake had made international news.

Also if I were going to be picky I would correct Husar and tell him that Rotorua is both in a volcanic crater and next to a volcano. And just for a random fact, recently (just 3 days ago) I discovered that my Kiwi grandmother's father's family have lived here in Rotorua for generations and were some of the first Pakeha in the region, her grandparents were here during the Tarawera Eruption in 1886 which devastated the region and destroyed Rotorua's world famous landmark The Pink And White Terraces.

Sorry for any concern caused by me abstaining from posting these last few weeks.
