If you're an EU citizen, you can now travel from Lisbon to Warsaw with no stopping.

Farer - from Lisbon to Tallin or Helinski.
But I'm a bit afraid of drug smugglers. Now, when there is not border countrol drugs from Holland (whensome of them are legal) might be smuggled to Poland.

Didn't really happen with germany, you can only buy a small mount here. Also relatively expensive.

I always thought that Schengen was the Second Reichs plan to encircle Paris in 1914.

There are times I wish they’d just ban everything- baccy and beer, burgers and bangers, and all the rest- once and for all. Instead, they creep forward one apparently tiny step at a time. It’s like being executed with a bacon slicer.

lol, this is a great thing.

my girlfriend managed to knacker her car number plate while in poland seeing the folks, she might have had trouble getting back into germany for the drive back to the UK had Schengen not sprang into existance while she was there.

Shouldn't the Dutch be more afraid since Poland is already on a major heroin route into Western Europe , what with the large numbers of production plants in Belarus , Ukraine and The Russian Federation . Plus of course with the new eastern states opening their borders it eases the routes from Moldova and Turkey .
So in short don't be afraid of the west-east traffic you imagine , think of the east-west traffic instead .

Aye, watch the buggers. They make you pay a full years road tax just to drive through a country smaller than Yorkshire.

Isn't Switzerland considering joining the Schengen area as well?

According to Wiki, they plan on implementing it at some point, probably because they realise how damn stupid they look.

Or maybe they won't because as time goes on, they see how the Schengen agreement makes the countries that joined look stupid with the ever expanding EU that will reach China soon.

Yes, we are in Schengen as well. We are, however, not in the EU (which, incidentally, is never going to happen, ever).

Borders will, however, not open as they are open in the EU countries (i.e. free movement between countries without being stopped). Schengen, as I understand it, is more concerned with Eastern Europeans being able to come to Switzerland and work without being hassled too much with their working permit.

We pay the least taxes (by far) compared to the EU countries. We are still a direct democracy. That's how stupid we look.

Don't be afraid about Poles stealing your job. Now you can come here and steal ours.

Talking seriously we have no hands to work here -everyone who want job can find it. I don't think much more people will be leaving Poland. Big part of emigration will be returning to Poland - especially that our economy rises much faster than into old countries of EU (with honorable exeption of GB).

    What the hey?

A pole worried about drugs coming from the west?

You do know that Poland is a transit country for drugs coming to us, right?

EDIT: And anyway, I do believe you'll still have border controls, at least we still have them. Tolls are still in place, remember.

That's because half of Poland has been working in the UK for the past two years

    Just 600 000 (circa) - i.e. 1,8 %... which might add some 0,3-0,5 % to our GNP ( 6-7 % in 2007-8) and at least two times more to your so don't complain. ;)

Personally I am more worried about smuggling through Lithuania (there are many problems with that for almost a decade now) and Slovakia ( their borders with Ukraine and Romania) also our economy might experience some problems with lack of labour force since the Ukrainians will have more troubles to get a visa - there are at least 1 000 000 of them working in Poland already similar with Belorussians.

Still a great thing considering I remember when the borders were covered with defences ordered to 'shoot to kill'...
