Thank you Bovi. I'm afraid I don't know how to 'check and change' the populations of any Carthaginian or following faction's cities as you suggest. Can you please explain how I would go about this?

Thanks, but I tried that and I can't access any more information about the opposing factions' cities than I can when I normally select those unobscured by the fog of war (i.e. buildings, units and population are hidden behind question marks and there's no way to see/amend them).
I presume I'm failing to do something obvious here, so any further clues would be much appreciated!

There's a pitchfork symbol showing in endangered settlements when you double-click them. It's tedious business to click them all, but could be worth it.

Ok I had a look through the Carthaginian cities and I can't see anything, but I don't really know what I'm looking for. Where would the pitch fork symbol be exactly? The top of the city info box? The bottom? And if I find one how do I reduce the population? Thanks!

If you siege a city, then view it, you'll see the siege symbol. The pitchfork will be right next to that area. Use the console to reduce population: add_population <settlement> -4000

This is very unscientific but it got me past a nasty one . I was playing as the romans, busting my ass to get to the reforms. 172 BC all i need is my praetor to become consul and to take 2 more regions...then CTD! ARGH!
I tried it a few times. CTD CTD
So what I did was not activate the script and end the turn. I let the computer decide all the battles during the OPP turns and it let me past.
Not sure why. But it worked.
