Thread: How do I build barracks?
RomulusAugustusCaesar 02:08 01-01-2008
I've conquered multiple provinces now (playing as Romani) and I've built the Level I Government. I can build Auxilia Barracks, but not Barracks for Roman Troops. What do I need to do to get Roman Barracks like I have in Roma, Arretium, Capua, etc.?

You can't. Not till the Marian Reforms. Until then, only auxilia barracks may be built outside of Italia. The challenge of the Romani is to supply your farflung armies from Italy. Makes it more interesting and challenging and realistic than it otherwise would be.

You might have to use mercenary because you can't resupply your army from provinces outside Italy.

He said he built a Level 1 government, that means he's still talking about homeland provinces. I think you might have to wait until the Polybian reforms hit, then you'll be able to recruit your best troops throughout Italy. Until then, in southern provinces like Rhegion and Taras you're stuck with Greek troops, while in the north you have Gallic units.

The Polybian Reforms.

Tear down your Level 1 governements in Taras, Rhegion, Bononia and Patavium and replace them with Level 2 for Taras and Rhegion and Level 3 for Bononia and Patavium. Otherwise you would only get very limited local forces. After the Polybian Reforms had hit you can change that again to level 1.

Thankyou all for the replies. It makes sense now.

One more question, though. Is there a set date that the Polybian and Marian reforms will come? Or like vanilla RTW can they pop up over 100 years early?

They are set to a balance of gameplay and realism. See the FAQ sticky for details of what you have to do to trigger the reforms. For the Polybian reform, you will probably just have to wait until 242BC, as the rest of the requirements are easily achieved before then.
