Thread: problems with changing stats and such
Hooahguy 16:43 10/01/08
so my friend wanted to know how he could see everything on the map without a spy, as he could in .80x. i told him to go into the EBBS and delete the ; before the perfect_spy command. he did that, but it woludnt let him save the changes. it said that the filename and path was incorrect. (he tried to overwrite) when i tried todo it, same thing. i went to the EDU and tried to change a stat of the Cohors IMperatoria, wich i knew would never come. same thing. woludnt let me save. hes running visa, (im running XP)
does that have something to do with it?

It might be you're working on a read-only file. You should remove that attribute - either through the context menu of windows explorer; or by saving a copy of the file, and editing the copy. The original can be kept as back up, the copy can then be used instead of the original.

and that can be acheived my naming the old EEBS as EBBScopy nd the new one as the EBBS....
but will he have to do that for every thing he wants to edit? thats annoying... glad i dont have a read-only text.....

As said you can also remove the read-only attribute through the context (if you right click something and see a new menu) in windows explorer. (But you don't get your back-up this way, so that might be a bit difficult should you mess up.)

You will have to do this for every read-only file you want to edit, yes... Read-only is a sort-of lock which can be applied for various reasons, but is most often a side-effect. (It can be the result of using some archive-format for instance.)

Windows Vista won't let you change files in the "Program Files" folder. I install all of my video games in a different folder now that I'm using Vista, in order to avoid this problem with my self editting.

Well no it wont.

Turning UAC off is not very smart.

UAC is much-loathed Vista feature that attempts to protect your system from malware infections by making you manually confirm a whole host of everyday operations. While it does not directly impact preformance, it can be annoying and is more hassle than good

So, as I said

go: Control Panel/User Accounts/Uncheck UA Control box/Restart!

It works fine, as I said, It allows you to 'see' your saves in the 'EB' folder and it enables you to 'overwrite files' without a trouble of 'clicking' 5 admin seconds every time you want to use some of your data, preferences atc..

And the risks for your PC are more likely to be solved with some good KAS 6/7 or 8 rather than UAC

anyway - LorDBulA - thank you for some 'smart' advices of how to 'support' my PC

1- Perfect spy allows you to see all the details of buildings and troops in towns/army as long as they are 'illuminated'. It doesn't show you enemy traits.
2- Yes, savegame compatible. (All script changes are savegame compatible.)
3- Open the script (...\Rome - Total War\EB\Data\scripts\show_me\EBBS_script.txt) and near the top will be a command that says, ";toggle perfect_spy". Remove the ";" and whenever you activate the script, perfect spy will toggle on.

Just for clarification.

MarcusAureliusAntoninus solution is much better as it only deals with problem at hand without causing huge security gap in user system.

Again I dont try to convince you that you should use MarcusAureliusAntoninus solution. Its clear that You hate UAC and thats ok, its your computer.

This is meant for other EB users that can take your advice without knowing implications that it brings.

Cheers mate.

Nah.. you are right about the UAC - its just that I am in the middle of the ALX mod creation and tests so I just cant bear the weight of UAC right now
