Why did the chicken cross the road?
So that its subjects will view it with admiration, as a chicken which has the daring and courage to boldly cross the road,
but also with fear, for whom among them has the strength to contend with such a paragon of avian virtue? In such a manner is the princely
chicken's dominion maintained. ~Machiavelli
ill just say the calvary are chariots![]()

I'd prefer a combination of all. although i do dislike chariots for some reason. the AI doesn't seems to know how to use Hoplites properly, could be taken out easily by flanking.
this is very true

But isn't that an indication that the AI doesn't know how to control the more mobile troops accompanying the hoplites, instead of the hoplites themselves? Hoplites are always easy to flank, it's the supporting troops that prevent that from happening.Originally Posted by QuintusJulius-Cicero
My favourite will always be cavalry. I remember when I shot up army after army of hapless Seleucids with Parthian horse archers. Or the time when I led a flying column of Long Shields into Italy, ala Hannibal. Good times.

Cavalry would have to be my favorite, though hoplite infantry are a close-in second. My armies (Hellenic, esp.) are based around a long line of 8 heavy infantry units, but my cavalry and missile troops always decimate any and all opposition before they even reach my infantry line.![]()

For Calvin and TosaInu, in a better place together, modding TW without the hassle of hardcoded limits. We miss you.
Legionary Cohort is the most competent of them all.
Missile cavalry. Definetly.
Either straight up horse archers, or numidian mercs. You can wear them down fantasticly, and when combined with regular archers theyre even more deadly.
Use up all the cavs ammo, as much of the infantry archer ammo as possible, and then chaaarge ze flanks!

Cavalry Archers, Cataphracts, and light infantry (ie. slingers and archers) just ripped through the unimaginative AI. I think one mostly cav. archers stack of mine went through 4 Scipionic stacks in one turn! I was amazed. So I have an attachment to cav. archers and cataphracts.

All of them. But if I had to choose, I would choose pikemen/phalanx/hoplites. They can kill most of the troops they fight, unless numbers are very high.

Cavalry for their mobility among other advantages. It would be nice if they came in bigger numbers though.

If they came in bigger numbers they would be way overpowered. (remember desert cavalry?)Originally Posted by totalwar092

Yeah, that's true.
I'd also like to add that I just launched a Parthian campaign and I am REALLY loving horse archers right now. And their upkeep is only, what, 110? I don't know why I didn't try them before.

parthia is pretty simple but their economy is terrible
The Parthian early economy is bad enough to put anyone off playing as them. I personally prefers Pontus than Parthia.

This poll certainly could have more catergory for different units.
Infantry. Period. When it comes right down to it, even if your macedon and greece, in the bloodiest of battles your men whip out the sword and who is better at swordfighting then good ol' infantry. They beat cav 1v1( usually heavy infantry only) they beat archers, skirmishers, hoplites (make them run behind the hoplites. They will take a few casualties from the suicidal charge but when they get inside the 10ft spear range the hoplite pulls out his sword and its over) and artillery. They also are very flexible and can be turned/moved whenever wherever they are needed. All around I choose the Urban cohort, although unrealistic they beat spartans 1v1 (with my charge strategy) and that's all I ask for![]()

I'm playing on Hard difficulty and my economy is doing enough to allow me to expand.Originally Posted by QuintusJulius-Cicero

I negotiated a ceasefire with the Seleucids that gave me Hatra, and went on to Egypt, figuring that since the Seleucids only have Antioch that they won't be a threat later. So I decided to stop the Egyptian advance and ally with the Seleucids. Meanwhile I'm fighting against Armenia and have taken their capital and almost have their other settlement.
Maybe it's just cause I'm playing on Hard rather than Very Hard. I don't know. But that's enough off-topicness for one post.

My favorite unit type would probably be Infantry - primarily since it is what I use most in many campaigns. Their main purpose is to hold the line in place while other units can nip round their flanks. I also use cavalry units and some missile cavalry units as flankers and archer killers (should they be harassing my infantry lines). Archers also sometimes come into play, although I do generally not use them as much as other unit types due to their poor performance once their arrows have run out.
Parthia isn't a hard faction to play as, although I usually follow the same strategy as totalwar092 - blitzing the Selcucids with the faction's starting units as rapidly as possible to gain some cities which can provide a worthwhile income. Sadly the infantry based AI doesn't really know how to deal with horse archers, so are a bit of a push over when they are used.

Good strategy TotalWar092. anyhow I just don't manage to do well with Parthia. always droping into negative treasures. Pontus also have good missile cav plus Cappadocian cavalry, Which is like equals to Catahpracts. they also have good infantry and chariots. and their early economies of course. which is the reason when i like them better than the Parthians.
perhaps u can put barbarin units as a seperate vote thing how do i vote![]()
