    Default Sallying Forth

Just been playing as Greece and defended Patavium (final result was a loss) but I was sallying forth, and, I admitted defeat by pressing escape and exiting the battle. however, it said that "your sally has been succesful" with 4 men left. So, I was wondering, what decides if the sally is succesful.

You must have all your men back inside the walls of your settlement, as far as I know. If you quit the sally-forth battle before all your troops are inside the walls, the computer will auto-calc a draw for you, with pretty heavy casualties in every unit, even if said unit was sitting in the town square when that happened. This is to represent the men cut down whilst you were retreating, I guess.
