If you're playing as a catholic faction, is it possible to make the Papal States your vassal? I have already made them my vassal when playing as the byzantine empire but never succeeded in doing that with a catholic faction.

I've never tried this, but since it's possible to do it with an Orthodox faction, I'm guessing there's a high possibility that you can force the Papacy into being your vassals once you get excommunicated.

why making them your vassals? Do like me, i own all cardeal seats on what i call "The once-in-a-while gathering of Portuguese religious men" (yes, i'm portuguese in the game). Them the pope will always be yours and do what you told because your relation with them will be 100% good
