Holiday Reading
First of all this is probably the wrong place entirely to ask this question so my deepest apologies. However, I won't be able to rest until I find this out.
Around 5 years a friend of mine gave me a book to read, or more precisely park of a series to read. I remember really enjoying it, but I can't remember what its called. I was hoping somebody could help me.
Although not an 'historical' book, it is set in an 'historical' world of technology so it seems likely that someone on this forum may have read it.
This where it gets complicated, because I only remember sparse bits of it. I remember that to the north of this fantasy land was a wall that kept wild/mutant animals out. (This may have been the 'winter wall', becuase beyond it was nothing but cold tundra). I also remember that there was a civil war in this land between the handsome younger brother and the dour older brother and heir whose main ally was the 'Onion Lord'. While there was also a scheming, Machiavelli-esque figure who was a crippled dwarf, but I forget his exact role.
I also remember that in another 'country' a member of the previous royal family was gathering a mercenary army of horseman to help him reclaim the throne.
I appreciate that this is probably no help at all to most people, but I hope that somebody, somewhere has read this book/series and can help me find the title.
