I can't locate the old post where I read this info, but IIRC: "desert" means desert, and all bonuses/penalties apply to rock or sand; but, "arid ground" isn't "desert", and no penalties or bonuses apply (I'm thinking of camels, here, which do incur a penalty in temperate or lush terrain).
