Thread: Been a long time, what faction?

Default Been a long time, what faction?

Hey all, been a long time since I've been on the TotalWar forums and was just curious what faction you are, and what you recommend to others.

I enjoy the sort of laid back kind of play, build up the economy first, then create army's later on.

What faction would you recommend for this type of play?

    Thank you in advance

    Dan

How about Spain? Safe starting position, no hordes.
Unite the iberian peninsula and develop your lands. Spain is a classical turtle faction as their unit roster gets better and better until late game.
You should not sleep in the first turns however, or the Portuguese will surround you and block your expansion.
Your first target should be Zaragossa. After that, you can crusade to Cordoba...
Blocking Gibraltar with some ships is a good idea as it stops the moorish troops from africa.

sound's like you may want to play england.the scot's are easy to deal with.if you do let them live,it will take them for even to attack you.got great bowmen.once you take over all of egland soctland and the that one town near soctland, trun them all in to city's,and so hi to money money money!

if you like lot's of money! you can try the byzantine rich strat town's,only city that more well builded then other's.right next to you is.yes you gressed it more rich land!italy ,can make you rich, and right next to you is the holy land's,witch has a lot of city's,and a lot with port's! you can heck get half way to winning by takeing over all the town's in the holy land's.later on get some great city unit's! the varangain guard, byzantine infantry.byzantine infantry, have the same stat's as byzantine lance the one not mounted, but i think byzantine lancer's have better moral or can walk more befor geting tried.

the only down side, will be the mongol's and the other guy's who will pop up.there is good new's! with a high level city, that hopefully can train byzantine infantry or better.can hold off them easy. i seen some one more like pic's of a army of byzantine spearmen, hold off 2 army's mongol's with only byzantine spearmen.

The Byzantines are pretty good at turtling, with so many wealthy cities nearby. However, eventually you might get into it with pretty much all of your neighbors, and face attacks from all directions.

As Denmark if you get Hamburg and sign an alliance with the HRE, you could spend virtually the whole game without being attacked, and the Scandinavian cities make a ton of money. Once you're ready, you can go a-viking in ENgland, or grab Balticcities or whatever you want.

Only bad thing is that they get their best units reasonably early, so unlike Spain which gets great late game units as Flavius mentioned, it might not be as much fun turtling.

Byzantium. All you have to do is work your arse off for the first 10-20 turns and then watch the money roll into Constantinople.

    Try some of the mods:

    https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?t=97908

Almost all of them have new factions.

Also, if it is turtling then it is England!

If you don't want a normal catholic nation, try the Egyptians.

They start off very isolated with no factions near and you have plenty of awesome cities in the levant to expand to. If you're fast, you can take almost all of them before the turks. What usually ends up happening next is a prolonged war with the turks/byzantines, but the turks arent much of a threat if they don't expand into the Levant. As for the byzantines, it all depends on how they're faring.

The best thing IMO, is that once you're nicely established, crusades will be called and you'll have a pretty fun time fighting off all of the crusade stacks.

Just about to start an eggy campaign (LTC, VH/VH) for that very reason. Also dont forget that mongols and timurids turn up right on your doorstep.

That is exactly why I have loved my Turkish Campaign I am currently playing.
Nothing better than, as you said, having the fight brought right to your doorstep.

I have just wiped out the final wave of mongols. Now for the Plague and then the Timurids.

To me the best part is that you have to keep a lot of your best troops in your homeland defending, instead of just pushing in one direction, annihilating everything in your path. (still do it anyway just not as fast )

PS. give LTC a shot too. Highly recommended

To conquer the world i like the faction which has a powerful calvary units.
My favourite faction to play as is probably Scotland because of the pike units and other infantry. I find that Scotland has the best defence and assault capabilities during a siege (minus their lack of field Artillery).
But in order to take on the annoying -f---kers like Turkey, Mongols, Hungary etc,, all the guys that have annoying horse-archer units lol.
ITs good to use factions like, Spain, or Egypt, or Byzantium ..
I especially enjoyed playing as Byzantium

I personally like any faction you can turtle with, as you can build up a large army and expand in just about any direction. I found Spain a good example of this as i took out portugal earlier on, then moved towards the moors and then focused on the french

I am currently working on a campaign as Portugal. with back burners on France, Venice, and Milan.

Now this is just my opinion, but I am going to recommend France to you.

Why: Easy early expansion all around, including economic Power Houses, without having to step on any body's toes.

Rennes, Bordeaux, Dijon, Metz, Antwerp, Brussels, Zaragozza, Ajaccio. You can easily have all of these in the first 10 turns without having to declare war once. Further expansion is also quite possible into places like Bern, Ireland, Valencia, and Wales.

Also, if you ally and remain friendly with your neighbors, the only factions you'll probably have to worry about are Portugal and Milan, who are notorious, but small and easily overcome factions.

You also get the most attractive starting Daughter, who can cripple one of your opponents early on by stealing one of their Generals, such as Dietrich Von Saxony.

    Anyway, just a thought.

Denmark,England,Scotland are good catholic factions to start with. As far as building economy and cities up they get easily defended areas. Not the best factions to expand quickly with tho.

I would also like to recommend England, they are fairly enclosed, you can always just forge an alliance, using Caen as your way to getting close to the Pope, then just conquer england and focus on economy. Then later, send an army on a crusade or go and conquer any part you fancy, the AI doesnt seem to have the intelligence to use boats and attack england. The only AI i have ever seen use a ship is Portugal, and that was during a crusade.
