It is an adaptation of a French comic strip: "Asterix le gaulois" where Asterix (and his friend Obelix) belongs to the last Gaul village (in 52 BC) thanks to the magic potion made by the druid which give a Great strenght. Of course it is all about comedy (and good one at least in the books) and no historical accuracy (the Romans are all wearing a lorica segmentata )

I though the main plot of this movie was that asterix and obelix weren't allowed to use their drug, and that they will have to train the old-fashion style to get into a winning shape

The story goes that while Asterix didn't use his drug (while Obelix was disqualified from the beginning because he was by definition perpetually drugged) they decided to set a trap by making a cauldron of the magic potion, which led to Asterix placing last while all the Romans finished drawn for first as they had drunk the potion. Which then led to the trap being revealed, the potion having been filled with a blue dye that turned the athletes' tongues blue.

But that aside, 'tortoise in animal terms'. XD Mein gott, mon dieu, and everything else.
