The biggest piece of advice I can give, though, is to stay away from Windows Vista. I've seen so many complaints about older games (including MTW) not being able to run on it, that I don't think I'll ever get it as my OS -- XP works just fine for me.
Martok pretty much covers it completely...

Reading through this, the only two issues I could think of personally were:

    1) Don't use Vista if at all possible. This probably would have a conflict with MTW:VI.

    2) Specifically download and install graphics drivers from 2003/2004. Any set from April 2003 or August 2003 usually works a charm. Regardless of what video card you're using, unless it's an absolute MONSTER, using the same video drivers you're used to on MTW should bypass any major issue that would come up.

The great thing about this game is that at this point in time, it really can be played on almost any system. I've actually seen people playing MTW:VI on buses/planes/trains over the years, on very basic laptop systems.

You should be ok...and even if a few problems crop up, they shouldn't be anything major.

Not to labour the point, but....

Graphics cards are an issue to be wary of. Any nVidia cards more recent than the 7xxx series are likely not to be of much use in running MTW....painful experience speaking here!

you get a roughly 5 minute speech about how you have conquered all who have stood before you dominated the world and secured your place in history

its a pretty good speech and its different for every faction
its what kept me playing all these years (trying to get that pesky polish victory)

can anyone say whether its different depending on start era? cos i may have another 3 years to do :)

Totally off-topic: MTW works perfectly on my laptop, which has Vista. I don't have Viking Invasion though, anyone know where I can buy it?

On topic: I've never got past 1300, I normally give up by then

I ve seen the defeat one many times-it s kind of a consolation speech.

The victory one is not bad; the Shogun one is better however. I ve never sat out a RTW campaign for that long.

Just check amazon, ebay or something. I've got my copy from e-bay but that was before MTW gold came out. I don't know how many copies of VI still float around.

If you can't get it perhaps you can buy the Gold edition DVD, it has VI on it (it should be in the bargain bin, don't forget the patch though! )

I am suprised at how many people dont play late or high. I think in some ways the game is more interesting as the computer is more developed, that means less peasent spam.

I personally don't care for playing in Late so much, as gunpowder starts becoming common. (I've never been a fan of the gunpowder age.) The High period is fun, though, and I do play it from time to time.
