RTW does this and screws up all the symbols (eg instead of a cursor you get a faction symbol or some other random symbol) but I think if you leave the packs in the data/packs folder and then extract them and copy the extracted files all to the data folder then you can change the extracted stuff and it will be effective in game (thats what i've done before I think).

Xpak doesn't seem to recognise one of the patch paks - is there a more recent version? Mine said (I think) 0.25

Sorry, der Ubern00b has just discovered how to unpack them one at a time, and it seems to be working!

    Flying,

Can you restate what you are trying to achieve? - please explain fully. Pack files are not your enemy

Basically if you unpack the pak files and then move them to the right place in the directory so as to use the game in an open format (and then delete the paks) then the game doesn't read the open files the right way and many of the symbols (eg the round tick and cross buttons, the ok buttons, the factions symbols etc) all get jumbled around so instead of an ok button theres a macedon symbol.

Flying is trying to unpack all the files so he can openly mod the files without having to pack them together again to test them. I was under the impression that it was possible to mod the open files and still use the packs and the game would still detect your changes and not read the packed info.

Basically we need clarity on how the game loads its paks and will paks overwrite the stuff in the data directory or will stuff in the data directory overwrite the paks?

Create a modfolder, leave the original game untouched, and use mod_0.pak for files that cannot be repathed and/or do not work from within a modfolder, drawing off those in vanilla where you wish. mod_1.pak will take priority over mod_0.pak should you wish to use that; this same logic exists for the priority of pak files.

There are threads on this I believe - search for "mod_0.pak" and I'm sure you'll find out how it all works. It's not really necessary to unpack vanilla files to use them, only as a point of reference. I've done very extensive modding and never needed to delete pak files and copy their contents to vanilla.
