Italians....or rabbits?

I am trying to eliminate the Italians with my assasins. The Doge is on Crete, with alot of ships around it, so the invasion would be a pain. However, every time I manage to kill him, he gets a heir who wasn't there before. I can see all their provinces, there are no heirs in any of them, and, law and behold, the new Doge is 15 yrs old. However this same thing has happened for FIVE years in a row!!! I have never used this tactic for eliminating the faction altoghether before, so I'm wondering is there some kind of safety catch that you can't eliminate a faction using only assassins, or is it just my bad luck that he was on viagra 15 yrs ago. Any comments?

He had one. But that one was 36, and btw they had no civil war (I get it when this occurs). The rest of the Doges are 15, fresh heirs......
