Thread: Damn it!

    Default Damn it!

    You darn EB b*stards!!!!
Last night I decided to give Vanilla a go for the first time in a year. At the beginning I was very pleased to rediscover how fast the Title screen loaded. But then ..... I saw the strategic map and it seemed .........just plain, so did everything. I forced a few turns but I never felt the same thrill from a time long past. Ahhh I guess I would never be able to leave EB behind.....

    Welcome to EB-addicts-anonymous.

If you look up "EB-addiction" in well known medical magazines, you will find this:

"While heroin and other drug addicts have at least a slight hope of recovery, the poor EB-addict will never be cured. Friends and family of addicts should know: the only way to live with this addiction is to play EB and burn a few towns down - if the addict is forced not to play for longer periods of time, there is the very real risk of him acting like this in real life."

Sad but true. That is one of the reasons I will never let my girlfriend play EB- she may accept me i bed only if I am dressed in LS. And that will be hard to come by. The other reason is that I only have one computer and it is for myself. And it is reserved for me. Unless it is Sunday and I am watching EPL games.

In a certain way it is a very clear answer. I already imagined something like that...

Oh yes playing some turns of Vanilla is a certain cure when feeling like critizing EB:

    - Winter every other turn
    - Much smaller map
    - No economy that you have to think of
    - Battles that do not last longer than 2 minutes from first contact to mass rout
    - Generals that are able to butcher entire armies on their own
    - No AOR, govermental system or reforms (save one for the Romans)
    - No faction specific traits
    - All Barbarians appear with the same 4 or 5 units
    - All Hellenic field nealry nothing but Phalanx, save for the Ptolemaians who field Bronze Age units
    - No chance to recruite anything than your factional units
    - Not more than 2 or 3 different units of mercs available per province
    - All units answer in English, German or whatever language your version of RTW is
    - etcpp

Well, last night I decided to give Rise of Persia a try, and although some things has been changed, it does look like Vanilla, but hey! I did enjoy it, I could relive great "THIS! IS! SPARTA!" and "TONIGHT WE DINE IN HELL" and such moments playing as the Lakedaimon /endStupidMovieLines

EB = The Empire Strikes Back
Vanilla = Attack of the Clones

    Or alternatively

Vanilla = Get Carter (Sylvester Stallone version)
EB = Get Carter (Michael Caine version)

I'm clearly showing my age here...

Vanilla = Listening to a comic book version of Attack of the Clones on the radio while being tortured by a gang of sadistic skinheads singing very disturbing songs about what they intend to do with you. Also, this particular version of Attack of the Clones has been dubbed to Japanese.

To be honest I found the english->chinese->english version of revenge of the sith far more entertaining than the english version, and I imagine the same would be true for the attack of the clones.

I'm addicted as well, but I didn't notice it with vanilla, but with one of the other mayor mods out there!

(it's an excellent mod actually, but after trying EB... I want to cry. I will not tell it's name to not cause a flame, however I can tell you it's a fantasy mod and not a historical one)

Oh god. XD XD XD XD I love this, Chinese that I am.

...I should be demonstrating cultural solidarity, but I ain't. Darned good! You haven't seen the worst yet.

In China 'Westlife' is translated, literally, as 'Boys from West Street'. And 'Coldplay' is translated 'Cool Play'. As in, 'yo, man, 'sup' cool, not 'temperature' cool. o.O And movie titles in China are NOTHING at all like what they are. 'The Day After Tomorrow' was translated EXACTLY as it meant--'the following day.'

...Okay they aren't as funny when I try to explain them in English, and I don't have Chinese software. Hmm.

Don't Worry, Pez. I speak Chinese too, so I was dying inside when I read that! It's funny how you get so much more out of it when you can't understand what the midway translation was. For instance, when Obi wan says hello to the the droids and Greivous, the literal translation of Chinese "hello" is "you good" sorta like a non-question way of asking how someone is doing today. But when they translated it, it was plural, so .... "you all good". Loads of laughs and LOL!

Um, well, I'm ethnically Chinese but nationally Singaporean, which means we are (almost by definition, be we Chinese, Malay or Indian) effectively-bilingual products of the compulsory primary and secondary education system. And anyway, I WAS a humanities student (read: the somatophylakes), so I daresay I'm somewhere in the 99th percentile where language ability is concerned. *preens*

Anyway, we have gotta be pretty good at history in the first place to be able to find our way to this place and post, so I suppose language ability has to be good along the way, no? Otherwise how in the world would we write our essays/theses/posts? ;-)

But really, Mouzaphaerre, your English isn't half bad either. In fact, it is quite excellent compared to some of my own fellow countrymen. I'm quite frankly embarrassed at some of them.

I remember when I first got RtR, which is a great mod and I was so damned impressed with it... Until I found EB, which blew me away. The vastness of EB, what with managing an economy, fighting hard fought battles, thoroughly planning what kinds of governments to install in cities, the realistic units, the history.... I'll admit, when I first tried it, it scared the shit outta me and I ran back to RtR but I toyed with EB more and more until I finally mustered up a successful campaign as the KH and I have not looked back yet. Now I have played as almost every faction and each campaign is always as entertaining as the prior. I never even bought MtW2 because I simply cannot justify not playing EB.

You should buy MTW2 because otherwise you won't be able to play EB2. And EB2 is to EB1 what, um, EB is to RTW, dare I say.

    You have that correct, monsignor.

I likened it more to a comparison of wines, though: Vanilla is the stuff that comes out of a box, while EB is a fine vintage, imported from Lusotanania....err, I mean Portugal.

Side effect of EB that nobody's talked about: calling regions by their classical names. I've caught myself calling Afghanistan as Sogdiana/Baktria a number of times of late...

Well, I am actually to young to drink wine, but I think I understand you anyway.
I almost called my homeland Skandza lately. Embarassing.
Though I often use the names of Italian regions such as Brettia, Campania, Kalabria, Apulia, and Latium, they just fit so perfectly, and there´s no better names I know of. At least I havn´t called Gotland for Auwjögötánöz and Visby for Gáwjam-Götánöz. That would have been akward, and would almost have convinced me to quite EB. Almost, but not quite.
