The best use I've found for them is for attacks on settlements. You don't have to worry about sieging if you have catapults, just attack and use them to knock down gates, walls, and towers.

Other than that, they aren't worth the price. You can train a whole mess of slingers for the price of one artillery unit, and the slingers will do so much more damage.
