Your army starts the battles in them. They aren't used by grouping units together.

Your army does in fact start out deployed as dictated by the formations file. However, you do have access to other formations as defined in the player formations file....i.e...Darth, MC, or whichever you happen to use. Presuming your forces meet the prerequisites to use said formations. To access the other player formations: group all your units together, ( or rather group the units you want to be a part of said formation ) you can do this also by holding down the Ctrl button on your keyboard plus the letter A. Once you've grouped all your units together, go to the lower right hand corner of the user interface and click the button that says bring up group formations or something to that effect. That will bring up the player formations available to you.
