    Default preference file query

    Hi Guys,

I just bought MTWII Gold and also installed DLV. My question is this:

Where is the preferences file?! I know it should be easy to find (and in RTW it is) but I can't locate it in the Sega/MTWII folder. I have played the game on both the strat map and the battle map, and have even saved a game, so the preferences should be recorded somewhere - but where?

The whole point is that I want to disable green arrow markers and banners. This is easy to do in RTW and should be easy in MTWII - except for the fact that I can't find a preferences file - either in the MTWII folder or the DLV folder.

Any help accreciated on this, as it's freaking me out!

Just to clarify: both the MTWII and DLV folders have folders called 'preferences' but neither of these folder contain a file called 'preferences'.

I was expecting to find a txt file for preferences, as in RTW, but there doesn't seem to be such a thing in the MTWII folder!

I will be buying M2TW gold within a month but until I wont be able to look. But I would take a long shot guess and say you may need to extract the pak files or look.

Youre probably mad at me for saying look BUT there may be something in that preferences file. Right click the folder icon text, click on the preferences option, and You will see something called

    Contains:

Tell me if there is a file in there. If so then it is in the hidden option, and will need to be unhidden.

    Hi Lemons,

Thanks for this. I checked the preferences folder as you said and right-clicked on it. It said that the folder contained 3 files, which it does, and these are:

    advice
    keys
    player

Please note that the 'player' file is a notepad txt file but is empty of data.

While I was looking at this, I noticed that the preferences folder is checked as 'read only'. I thought this might be the problem, so I unchecked 'read only', applied the change and clicked OK.

Then I went back into the game and fought a quick battle. Then I went back to the preferences folder but guess what? Although I had unchecked the 'read only' box, when I went back this box was checked again. And so I was in the same situation as before.

I don't know if you have any ideas but would be glad to hear from you if you think you can help.

Basically, I can find the preferences folder, but not a preferences file. The preferences folder contains 3 files as listed above. The preferences folder is checked as 'read only' and even when you uncheck this, apply and save, after running the game the folder is checked as 'read only' again!

medieval2.preferences.cfg is found in your main M2TW directory.

I think the read-only thing is to help protect that so it is not "edited" during gameplay. I am a bit confused but do the last suggestion and check your main folder, not data, preferences, etc.

So this sounds wierd because it is mainly restricted to Windows files, but do the file check thing I had walked you through above but this time do it to the SEGA folder, and see if there are hidden files in there. If so and you cannot find the pref file, then that would be my only other guess. If so then I will walk you through the steps to get it unhidden.

    Hi Lemons,

Thanks for this reply (and also to FactionHeir). I just right clicked on the main MTWII folder and checked properties for hidden files. Apparently there are 230 Folders and 2,853 Files in there but the 'hidden' box is unchecked, so I'm presuming that there are no hidden files.

That said, the 'read only' box is checked - could that be a problem?

The only notepad txt files showing in the main directory are EULA, Readme and System log.

I have played the vanilla game several times now and expected a preferences file to be generated, as in RTW, but so far it is not visible.

    Thanks again for your help.
