I believe a new updated version of some type of forum thing came out in December that I happened to learn about during my self taught of creating a website.
For example my brothers website, he had just updated

Or do we use a different set of codes?, (still doesnt let me edit), also I wasn't entirely sure there was a new version until my brother confirmed it.

umm arent twc's VB looking far newer than ours?
We are actually using an older version of vBulletin, v3.5.4, while the latest release is v3.6.8 Patch Level 2. I'm not quite sure, but I do believe that vBulletin does have a few nasty snags and bugs which can occur with upgrades. There also is the issue of licensing - unless the software is leased, costly regular fee, non-security updates cost a fairly large amount.

A website I used to run used vBulletin. We paid the annual licensing fee and it wasn't bad at all. Something like $20-$25 USD. I would certainly be willing to donate to the Org, if funds were needed for upgrades or other improvements.
So would I. Is there a donation pay pal account?

On a more serious note: who is actually paying for this board and the software used. I thought it was for free (well not really for free, more like in exchange for having advertisements on this site)?

I do believe the ads only pay for the hosting - the cost of running and maintaining the server(s) which the site runs from. The cost of the software itself presumably has to come from the owner's pocket. Although there are free, and in some cases even open source, alternatives to vBulletin, the features are often not as technologically advanced or do not exist at all - e.g. SMF/phpBB do not support WYSIWYG editing.

IIRC, Telefragged.com meets the hosting demands of this board in return of the advertisements. I'm not sure abou who pays for vBulletin though. On a more serious note: who is actually paying for this board and the software used. I take that offer and because I'm feeling generous today I'd like to donate you 50$ -1000$ that means.....you owe me 950$.Originally Posted by Andres

Hello,
Jelsoft is working on vbulletin 3.7. There are some things to think about.
It's a forum and users make add-ons to get extra functionality or integration with other scripts. Those add-ons do not always work with the new version, some can be adjusted, some are replaced by something else, but it's at least always some work.
Sometimes the new version is little more than the old version with some hacks officially built in. So, it's a lot of work and risk for just a version number.
I'm not that excited about 3.7 yet.

If you wind up finding a new system that you are excited about...Definitely count me in as someone who would contribute.
With just some of us contributing, I'm sure you guys could come up with something amazing...

I'd like to stay in this version and not upgrade to something that could give problems.

Yes, but let us 'deal with it' when a less buggy version comes out. I wouldn't like to risk having the Guild being wiped just to gain access to a few new features.

Yes, the forum works.
The upgrade from the 3.0 series to the 3.5 was an important one I think, especially because of the plugins.
That update wasn't totally painless, as hacks (that is just a mod/custom code to add features) stopped working and had to be modified. Not to mention the other problems.
It's just what you are looking for of course, but the new upgrade doesn't seem to be a revolution.
It has the threadprefix built into the new release. We already have that hacked in. It's not the only thing of course.
Installing the new version may or may not interfere with the prefixes we already have. The interaction between Jelsoft and the modding community is pretty good afaik, and some modders work for Jelsoft now. Maybe it has to be rebuilt again, ten minutes perhaps, but what's next?
A useful mod like the favourite smileys may stop working altogether though.
At some point we may have to upgrade (as happened several times already) and we may have to sacrifice something.
Upgrade: what do we gain, what do we risk and what will we lose.
