    Default Canada unsafe for travel?

    http://ca.news.yahoo.com/s/capress/a...ia_cda_warning

I figured this was more front than backroom material, given how silly it is.. Apparently the Australian Government put up a warning (several years ago) about traveling to Canada on their "Smart Traveller" website. It's ranked in the second safest category, but on a slow news day just a few weeks back that was deemed dangerous enough for an article titled "Australia issues travel warning against Canada; says not as safe as SKorea " to be written.

Risks taken travelling to Canada include terrorist attacks, earthquakes, "heavy snow, windchill and ice in the winter, and forest fires that can erupt 'at any time.'"

Countries surprisingly safer than Canada? China, Chile, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Belarus, Romania, South Korea, and Latvia.

    Terrorist attacks? In CANADA?

Somehow I don't think we're on top of Al-Queda's hit list.

Maybe they think the terrorists will have trouble distinguishing between Canada and the U.S., like some of the people I've met travelling abroad.

I think they got stuck with that because of some Bin Laden tape that vaguely threatened Canada along with the U.S. and most of Western Europe.

Didn't Canada send troops to Afghanistan? I seem to recall a Canadian soldier there holding the record for the longest shot made under combat conditions

The earthquake thing surprised me the most. Well, after the "country is in second safest ranking for travel= news" thing.

It is a desolate, frozen northern wasteland, filled with unwashed barbarians with bad accents who swill terrible beer (yeah, you heard me!) and rabid polar bears prowling in search of manflesh.

Well, there was the FLQ...thirty or so years ago.

What? I thought the only terrorist that would be intrested in attacking canada would be some very very serious /b/tards
That was on a This Hour Has 22 Minutes top ten list (might have been Air Farce though, not 100% sure):

2: Attack Saskatchewan: Nobody would notice.
EDIT: And I don't think there's been a large earthquake outside of BC for years.

Cool Re: Canada unsafe for travel?

Pfft, the Travel warning is a marketing ploy to 'sex up' Canada. Make it look cool and dangerous. The warning has been there for several years and the amount of Australian tourists have been climbing. Over 200,000 last year or 1% of the population of Australia fly almost half way around the globe to visit Canada.
Our genes maybe in the basement but it does not stop us chosing our point of view from the top.

Canada... an ambiguous block of Semi Autonomous Nation-States, waving the Blood Stained Maple Leaf of a repressive, Socialist, and Partially French Speaking, Agenda... We have much to fear from them.

What's really cool are the forest fires during heavy snows.

Some jerk takes the spark arrestor off the muffler of his chainsaw and then starts cutting pine that have been in a drought all summer. The things are tinder dry, the snow doesn't help at all since it's frozen and can't be absorbed. The saw shoots sparks on the branches, the needles catch fire like they're soaked in gas, and the whole tree lights goes up like a torch. The snow barely stops it because the wind fans the flames. And it always spreads if the forest is dense.

    I'll see if I have a pic.

I can imagine the filming of samas next video:

"And canada's endless supply of infidel maple syrup shall break and turn into a sea of holy fire!"

"What I thought maple syrup wasnt against the qur'an."

    "IT IS NOW!!!"

We may never know, perhaps osama's pilots were oringinally targeting the CN Tower, but then they thought: "OH **** Im not going to kill all the tourists and children in there, ok second best the Twin Towers" (They acually said worlds highest office blocks)

    No.

I just know that we need to do it now. We don't attack Canada in less it's the dead of winter. It's tradition!

    Sarcastic? Bien non mom ami.

This is a pic of one of the smaller winter forest fires. If you look closely, you`ll even see the handsome doofus-goofus in the shot warming a slice of moose pizza over the fire. This blaze burnt for hours and took out hundreds of square feet of prime Quebec timberland. It was a disaster of mediocre propotions.

We Canadians are nothing if not environmental oppotunists.

Please tell me you don't still do the rape-the-land clearcutting. Not that I know we're any better mind you.

You know Canada actually consistently has a slightly higher per capita rate of violent crime than the US (Though a much lower murder rate). It's mostly a demographic difference though, and a couple of locals punching each other over the Leaf's latest loss is no reason not to visit.

As far as the list of safer countries... no comment.
