    Exclamation HELP Please!

Okay, I recently got Shogun Total War Gold Edition, version 1.00 and it installed fine and everything. I went to the tutorial and did all the camera controls and everything.

But I can't get my men to march! I keep left-clicking just like it says but they won't move! I don't know what to do! Everything else seems to work fine...but I can't even command my men... can somebody help please?

Oh yeah, My computer is windows Vista, but it plays the other Total War games fine and it plays Starcraft, a really old game for Windows 97... So I don't know why Shogun is not working.

Hey Lord Chu, good to see you made it here.

Sorry you're having difficulties mate, especially as I seem to recall having had that problem with the tutorial myself at one point. I don't remember if I ever figured out what the issue was, though, much less the solution. I want to say I ended up having to unintall/reinstall the game in order to fix the problem, but I'm honestly not sure.

Just to clarify: Is this happening right at the beginning of the tutorial?

    Thanks for responding!

I went and did something very cowardly and not fitting of a true Shogun...I went and installed it on the laptop and it worked fine!

Unfortunately...I'm terrible at it! I played a campaign as the Oda Clan and lost a battle and all my provinces were swarmed by rebel hordes of ronin.

I wasn't sure what to build in my provinces either...I'm also unsure how to tell what you've already built... I just need some general help at Shogun right now...

Well I'd say you're in luck, as I doubt there will be any shortage of people here to offer you advice. Here's a few tips to start you off:

1.) First of all, I recommend picking an easier clan for your first time playing! The Oda are fun, but they don't have the easiest starting position (as you're already discovering). My personal recommendation is to play a campaign as either the Hojo or Uesugi -- both clans have great income, and their territory is fairly easy to defend.

2.) Also, if you're not already doing so, I advise you to play on the Easy difficulty your first couple times through. In addition to starting with more money, your troops also receive a +4 morale bonus, which of course means they'll stay in a fight longer.

3.) Note: Remember that you only collect money once a year in the autumn -- you don't have money constantly flowing in like you do in the other Total War games. Keep this in mind when budgeting your money for building structures, training troops, etc.

4.) To see what you've built in a province, just click on it and then look at the bottom of the screen -- all the buildings you've constructed so far will appear there. If it's a province you've built up a lot, you may need to click on the down arrow provided to look at all the structures there.

5.) As for as *what* you should build, it really depends on the province: You should upgrade the farmland in provinces that have an income of around 400 koku/year or higher. Make sure to build mines in any provinces with mineral deposits (gold, silver, and/or copper). If you have any provinces with iron sand deposits, turn them into troop-producing centers -- iron sand deposits not only allow you to build an armourer, but it's also required in order to train Heavy Cavalry & Naginata.

5a.) Do not -- I repeat, do not -- try to build everything in every province! Otherwise you'll find yourself constantly broke. Specialize your provinces, just as you would in the other TW games -- try to use just one province specifically for training your Buddhist Monk Warriors, another for your agents (Ninja/Shinobi/Emissaries), etc. Of course, the more common units such as Yari Ashigaru, Yari Samurai, & Samurai Archers have such low build requirements that you'll probably be able to train them in a number of provinces, which is fine.

Hopefully that's enough to give you an idea of what to do. If you have any other questions or need more advice, just give a holler!

    Hello Lord Chu,

    Welcome.

Inability to control your men could be a graphic card problem. Do you happen to have a GF8?

I'm not sure what graphic card I have...but I got the troops to work so...it's fine.

I really like Shogun so far. I've had a great time! (despite some setbacks at the start)

My lands are filled with ronin...

    My armies are crushed.

    I have no money.

    No land...

Actually, I restarted as the Mori clan and I've taken over half of Japan so...I'm going to start going for higher difficulty soon. It might make the game more interesting. I enjoy how there is less micromanagement involved and how your provinces aren't constantly on the verge of revolt as they are in RTW. Also, I've enjoyed using Shinobi to stir up trouble! I've yet to use the Geisha and Ninja though... I think Shogun is a great game. Looking forward to some awesome games.

    That's great Lord Chu,

do you know what made it work?

The STW Gold you have is the Warlords DVD edition by Sega (different campaigns, including Mongols)?

I'm not sure what made it work...I guess just installing it again. I'm glad it does work though!

I do have the Shogun Gold Edition by Sega (DVD), it has the Sengoku Jidai campaign and it has the Mongol Invasion Campaign.

It also comes with 3 other campaigns where you can start at different years between Sengoku Jidai and Mongol Invasion.

You can start at Sengoku Jidai, 1530, 1550, 1580 and it has the Mongol campagin.

I've just been playing on the Sengoku Jidai because that seems to be the normal/standard one. It also has the greatest number of clans.

Hey Lord Chu, good to hear that you're enjoying the game

Regarding the campaigns; I find the 1530 and 1550 campaigns the 'easiest', because the great clans only have a few provinces and buildings available - which means lots of ronin, who usually don't really work together. Just a thought!

He is the one I would like to talk to.

Can you tell me what kind of problem with the GF8 series?

I have the same problem with my new PC which has the GF8600 GTS. Is there any other solution other than using the software mode (which works fine for me but just plain ugly). Also, I have a widescreen at 1440x900. It won't display any other resolution correctly.

My current driver is 6.14.0011.6921 (169.21). The old driver is 5819 which is worse. I guess the 10.xxxx driver won't support my GF8.

My older PC which has the GF7600GT with 6.14.0010.9371 driver runs STW/MI (and all other TWs) just fine.

    Both PCs running Windows XP.

One more problem: PC lock up when I quit the game. The only way to get out is to reset.

    Thanks for any advise.

    Hello pdoan8,

The often reported problem with the GF8 (8800's) is inability to control units in STW and MTW battles.

I recall one post that claimed to have solved it, without saying how. Many other people have tried different drivers and just failed to fix it.

I've recently had this problem on a 7xxx series card and managed to solve it. Have a look at the MTW CTDs thread in the apothecary and see if it is of any help.

After five (yes 5) reinstalls and re starts with Uesugi, I ve decided to post my woes here:

It began with the sound going of the Emissaries in the Throne Room- irritating, but I reinstalled to fix it , couldn t so just put up with subtitles. The files are all, there in the right place, and they play- I tried them out.

Then I played a few turns as Uesugi 1530 Campaign on Hard. After saving the game and then restarting later, I kept getting a message like: "ShogunW has to close, we re sorry for the inconvenience"

Several reinstalls have yielded the same pattern- a few turns, then sorry for the inconvenience.

I ve tried medium (recommended) install. Same result. I ve tried without Throne Room, without ingame movies. Same result.

I usually like Full install becaiuse I enjoy the bangs and whistles that go with the game.

So in frustration I ve uninstalled again, and gone back to MTW VI ... for now.

Try the lowest sound quality, throne room turned off and movies turned off, and see if that makes a difference. If you're sending two agents on a mission against the same target and then try to cancel the second mission because it's no longer needed it will crash the game. Just leave the agent where he is and he will call off the mission himself when you end the turn.

If the crashes continue after this try to note down the error if there is one. Also try to look for a pattern. What were you doing when it crashed? Was it after a battle, before a battle, at a certain point, on a particular turn?

    Thanks, as always, caravel.

This is not so much a crash to desktop, as a failure to start the game. It happens after I have finished a session and then want to restart. I ll try to get the error message.

    Thanks again.

    All the very best.

    Hi Tony,

Your problems sound familiar. It is way back to the time of DX8 however.

As for the sound, back then , running dxdiag and adjusting the hardware acceleration level (turning it off) would usually fix the sound problem. The problem may remain sometimes with some PC with onboard sound. I remember having problem with the onboard AC97'. I had to buy a sound card to solve the problem.

As for the crashing when launch the game: back then, some onboard video have problem with direct draw if using DX8 or early version of DX9. The lastest DX9 version seems to be OK.

    Many thanks, pdoan8.

I ll be trying a fresh install soon. Then either it will sort itself out, or I ll post details of the Error Message.

Hope fully (fingers crossed) it ll return to its previous glory- this is the only time I ve had a problem.
