    Default RTR

I've installed Rome total Realism , following the steps of the tutorial from the official site, installed patches and updates...
I tried to launch the game...
THen I can see a very nice loadingscreen for about 3 secs and then the program quits...
Anyone an idea why? maybe i overlooked something? Or do i have to change something in the data? Any suggestions?
If there's no answer on these questions, is it possible to remove RTR without having to uninstall rtw first?

    Thx

bumping threads doesn't get you answers any quicker it just makes people annoyed with you

this also isn't really the right place to ask that sort of question - forum is for people trying to mod the game themselves not for installation problems with existing mods.

There are a few different versions of RTR around, Platinum edition and Iberian conflict are modfoldered so if its one of those you can just delete the mod-folder and keep playing your normal RTW without re-installing. Have you checked if your normal RTW game works at the moment? If its one of the earlier full versions of the mod like v6.0 or gold they do overwrite the original files so you might need to re-install RTW to get things working again.

You're probably better off asking questions either on their website where you got the download or on their TWC forum http://www.twcenter.net/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=26.

Make sure you know which version of the mod you've tried to install and which patch version of RTW you have got and double check what the installation instructions said.

    Good luck....

    * Most people are downloading RTR 6.2 (for RTW 1.2) from the old official site at www.rometotalrealism.com

The current official site is at http://www.rometotalrealism.org/

The info you've given us wont really tie down the problem as well. Try adding -show_err to the command line of the shortcut - it'll hopefully give you an error message when it crashes. If its crashing that quickly its proberably a file error on startup parsing.

There also isn't much problem with deleting RTW and RTR and reinstalling RTW to change it just take the contents of your save folder and back them up and you wont lose any saves - also you can remember what factions you unlocked and put them back into PLAYABLE in the descr_strat.txt in world/campaign/imperial folder.

    @Makanyane sorry for being unpatient

Today was my mod try day and I wanted to try another mod ; came up with Roma Surrectum? and seemed to be a pretty good one (sorry for switching mod suddenly), and there I had same problem but this time i got error message says this:

Script error in data/ descr.battle_map_lightning_and_fog_control.txt ,at line 7, column 1
    expecting reading min_light_intensity

Probably something to change in script, but since i'm not a modder (yet :p)
, I wanted to ask for advice first before changing anything

Part of reason for explaining this is not really the right place to ask is that you are very unlikely to need to change anything in the text files yourself to get one of these major mods to work - you're getting errors because you've somehow got a mangled installation, and trying to fix the errors one by one isn't going to get you anywhere!

The most common cause of problems is that you had wrong version of RTW - it sounds like you probably can't get into the game at all at the moment, but for future reference before installing mod launch the original game first go into options and see what the version number in the top right hand corner is. It can be 1.2, 1.3 or 1.5 for RTW and 1.4 or 1.6 for BI.

Then check which version the mod says it needs, you can upgrade to later patches if you're on 1.2/3 but if you are already at 1.5 you can't downgrade installation to earlier one.

Did you check before you tried installing Roma Surrectum, which version of RTR you had used (a mod-folder one or not), if it wasn't a mod-foldered one did you uninstall and reinstall RTW to get back to a clean version first? Roma Surrectum says it needs RTW patched to version 1.5 are you sure you had that before installing it?

Roma Surrectum definitely isn't mod-foldered, so if you can't get that running by trying their installer again, you probably will need to re-install RTW now!

Installing mods, and even modding, isn't normally difficult.... you just need to make sure you're not putting incompatible bits on top of each other!

I just checked - that file extract looks like what should be in Roma Surrectum mod.

Line 7 is actually the first active one that starts - "enable gloom....
they've used the BI version of the file, which must work with the 1.5 patch of RTW.

I still suspect your problem is that you weren't actually patched to 1.5 before installing the mod. (the patch updates the .exe file so files that run on one patch won't run with other one)

You really need to reinstall - make sure you patch to 1.5 see the official sega forums for patch if you haven't got that: http://www.totalwar.com/ then 'Support' then 'Rome'.... Then start again with installation, as Roma Surrectum overwrites the original data files you should make a copy of the game before you install the mod if you've got the space, that will save you going through re-installation process again!.

Thanks for suggestions, will certainly try them out.
But about that patch 1.5 I'm sure I did install him before installing RS . It's not thet the problem. But I've been looking around on internet and I found some topics on that totalwarcenter, talking about exactly the same error.
They also told it would be wrong to have a data folder in a data folder, so you had to cut it and paste in the rtw folder.
All topics were telling the same as you did, except one:

it said something about batch files or so, and that it didn't completely run properly. And something with CAS extractor or so.

But like I said, I'm new to all this and don't really know yet how to handle it, so please be very patient with me, because all of this, is difficult to understand for a 15 year old I think.

Only one of the mods I downloaded so far, worked properly from the first time. It was the unlock all factions patch. Other mods where you have to change scripts and put new commands and so on, are a bit difficult to handle for me. I'd love to play mundus_magna_2 but there are too many things that I 'd have to change manually

    Thanks for the replies

First of all which mod are you actually installing, your post says RTR as the mod, but your files seem to be from RS according to Makanyane.

Yes indeed, first I tried RTR , but when that didn't work properly, I was too impatient and I couldn't wait till I'd try RS... So that script is indeed an Rs one
I quit the RTR because there I didn't know at all what was the problem...

For RS you installed to the wrong location, install to your RTW folder, NOT the data folder, you installed to the data folder. This is assuming you have the latest installer (1.5a), if you have an older installer you may also not have let the command prompt run until completion.

I have tried and tried and tried and tried in the past to download RTR,but it's never installed right.

That was when I was playing 1.3,though,and uninstalling it didn't seem to delete my saved games, though. Maybe I'll try again sometime. Can it function alongside XGM,or not?
