My first computer didn't have a hard drive.

When I finally got old enough to buy my own computer, and not just mooch off other people's, I went crazy and got a 20 meg hard drive. I was styling, yo!
When I first entered the working world at the end of 1981, I was system admin for a PDP-11 mini-computer with four 28mb hard drives. The disk platters were about the size of a medium pizza. Each drive was a standalone unit a little smaller than a washing machine. I did some system activities with mag tapes and a reel-to-reel mag tape drive. Lying around the computer room were a few rolls of paper tape, but the reading/writing mechanism was long gone. And behind a filing cabinent was a stone tablet, hammer and chisel...![]()

I think my first HD was of 200 MB, or 500 MB. Pwnt.

MY HDD size progression:
None (Apple IIGS 2.8mhz)
25mb (286 12mhz)
40mb (386 20mhz)
80mb (486 33mhz)
400mb (486 133mhz laptop)
From then on, I started upgrading drives to larger sizes (including the laptop), instead of sticking with the stock model, so the list becomes useless. I do remember my father talking about how 25mb was more than enough space for us and that we wouldn't need more. Then I got Wing Commander 2.

I started out with a 286 with 1MB of RAM, 20MB HDD and a mono monitor (amber) and moved on from there. I'd say that on the whole I upgrade less frequently these days even though hardware is much cheaper than it used to be.
