Default What happened to soly's "graphic images from israel/lebanon" thread?

earlier today, solypsist created a thread in the backroom in which he said he was in either israel or lebanon, or at the border, and he posted some graphic pictures of death and destruction.

that thread has disappeared, i would like to know why. the reason i'm asking is because in that thread, Eclectic noted that he had seen one of those pictures in a magazine, and was wondering what the connection was between solypsist and the magazine's photographer. some of the pictures which were posted can be found at various places around the internet, as well.
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

was this thread removed for reasons of misconduct? content? personal security?
now i'm here, and history is vindicated.

    Intriguing.
There are times I wish they’d just ban everything- baccy and beer, burgers and bangers, and all the rest- once and for all. Instead, they creep forward one apparently tiny step at a time. It’s like being executed with a bacon slicer.

    Interesting web site.

Perhaps hes has sold the rights for the pictures to those magazines.
That would possibly mean that he doens't own them anymore and isn't allowed to show them?

I dare say I think there are some possible explainations.

Though, looking at that one blog, it says that they were AP pictures...

Well, I'm not leaping to conclusions yet. Perhaps he sold the rights to AP? Perhaps the blogger doesn't know what he's talking about?

When I get home, I'll take a look in the Newsweek magazine and see if it says AP or if there is a credited photographer. I am fairly certain it was a credited photographer but I could always be wrong.

I am curious: Why remove the thread entirely though? Why not just remove the pictures and explain the reason? Why go to the extra trouble?

The thread should have stayed. The mods have a nack of removing the evidence sometimes. I'm going to give Soly the bennifit of the doubt, I'm sure he has a good explaination for this. I'm interested in what he's going to say.

One more thing, AP does purhase pictures from freelance photographers all the time. There is a good explaination for this I'm sure and we should wait to hear from Soly before we draw conclusions.

solypsistdid say that he didn't know how long the pictures would be up or something...

Considering the potential problems, maybe deleting the thread was safer than just removing the pictures...

    We'll hopefully know soon enough...

Did anyone notice the street/buildings picture in the second batch , there was a nice curvature feature , just like he uses in his NY street scenes .

Not a very usual feature amongst regular war photographers submitting pictures to a NY based company .

The photograph in Newsweek was taken by Nasser Nasser of the AP. That means he is the originator and he took it as a part of the AP. In other words, contract photography.

It is on pg 25 of the July 24th edition.

In this thread where Soly said he was going to Iraq Soly said his name was Jason https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?t=64086 Now Nasser could be a pusedyomnm or Soly could be lying or he dosnet want to give out his real name or and this is probably most likely Soly was somewhere he wasnt supposed to be and sold or gave the photographs or dropped them anonmysly (sic) Let the man speak

Nasser Nasser an AP photographer from South Lebanon.

Associated Press reporters Hussein Dakroub and Hamza Hendawi in Beirut, and AP Photographer Nasser Nasser from south Lebanon contributed to this report
    http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2006/...8ISF4SO1.shtml

google "Nasser Nasser" photgrapher, and you'll get some hits, all of which identify him as an AP photographer from south Lebanon, working in tandem with AP reporters.

    Phoney.

He's probably too busy shagging all those supermodels to explain himself. Must be tough being an international glamour photographer as well as a gung-ho war correspondent. He's probably James Bond as well.

Several years ago the 'man' slagged me off for no reason at all in a thread (before he became a mod). I was puzzled and taken aback, but I kept my dignity and refrained from replying in kind. I thought he was a phoney then, and I still do now.

AFAIK, Soly is in Israel or Lebanon right now and can't attend to his Org duties. It would be charitable not to make accusations about him while he is away. Please wait for him to return before discussing this topic further. I don't think he was planning a long stay.

hhmm if I remember correctly he didn't say it was his pics and the thread was more about if he was going to Lebanon or not but decided it wasn't worth it.

I disagree. Its too bad the proof has been deleted.

After reading the thread, one was certainly lead to believe that they were his pictures.

That is why so many were surprised when Eclectic busted his ...

Did he really expect people to believe that he was some kind of super model photographer/war photographer/totalwar.org moderator? And that he cared so deeply about the members of the org that he would bother making a thread from war-torn lebanon or Iraq just for us, claiming his survival was uncertain!

When you're nothing but a fraud, its not a good idea to antagonize people from a position of power. Solypsist's "moderation" turned away many intelligent, rational posters who he happened to disagree with. I, for one, smell blood.
