Thread: Please tell me a story.

  1. #1

Default Please tell me a story.

Make a story based on the Middle Earth world.

-Continue the story after the ending of The Return of the King. Assume that there has been a coup d'etat against Eldarion, the son of King Elessar (Aragorn).

-Include the siblings of Aragorn and Arwen.

-Make the story longer than one page, one page as in A4.

-Start the story in Minas Tirith.

    Please.

An unusual post...! But an interesting idea.

If you buy the Lord of the Rings book with all the appendices in, you get to find out what happens after! But admittedly only until roughly around Aragorn's death. Wouldn't involve much in the way of Elves, Dwarfs or Hobbits either.

Wonder if this might be the first mission for the as-yet-officially-unnamed Writing Group?

    How's this?

Frodo Gamgee looked down on his latest conquest. The men of Gondor cowered in their homes. They knew the legends of his namesake, “Frodo the nine fingers”. They knew that a single Halfling had done what armies of elves and men had not. This had aided Frodo “the Usurper” in his wars. Men were the most foolish of the races of Middle Earth and even in the Fourth Age, rumor swayed them more than fact.
Samwise had always been proud of his son’s amazing abilities. He had thought it a blessing or “Elven magic”. His son was tallest, fastest, most nimble and most clever of all hobbits. Samwise lacked the wit to recognize the true reason. Smeagol had followed the One Ring into Mount Doom’s fires. Frodo Baggins had left for the home of the Valar. The third hobbit to have worn the ring had not escaped its curse. The One Ring had laid a seed of evil into poor Sam’s own seed.
Frodo had used his abilities well. He had learned what King Legolas and King Gimli could teach him of the Lore of their races. He had delved into the Barrows near the Old Forest and even into the ruins of Dol Guldur. He had exhumed “Sharkey” Saruman’s corpse and taken his robe and made a Sceptre from his skull. He painstakingly collected what artifacts he could of the old ways.
Then Frodo had gone to Orthanc, the tower of Isengard. Gandalf and the Men of Rohan had plundered the tower, but they lacked the skill of a hobbit to find secret doors and hidden places. He had learned how to make Orcs and had himself fathered the first generation of “Orclings” with those that he had found in Moria.
Now his army was mighty and the fear he inspired had chased the son of Aragorn from the White City. He searched through the dark places of the King’s tower until he found what he needed. The magic was fading in Middle Earth. He needed a link to the Valar.
Quickly he arrayed himself with the talisman that he had collected. He looked deeply, eagerly into the prize that Aragorn had taken those long years ago, the Palantir of Orthanc.
The sky above Minas Ithil darkened and a huge bolt of lightning struck the Tower where Samwise had worn the One Ring. Thunder fell upon the mountains and rolled across the ashen plain of Gorgoroth. Dust stirred upon the shards of Mount Doom and continued on its trek to the ruins of Barad Dur.
Rangers and Elves stood guard there. The ash blew in their faces and stung their eyes. Deep within the ruins another Palantir was buried. It had known only one master for a great age. This stone had belonged to a Dark Lord. The Palantir awoke as Frodo called.
The same thunder also echoed across the Anduin and up to Frodo. He chanted over and over from the text he had found hidden in Saruman’s chambers. Finally, he opened his own eyes and stared deeply into the darkness of the stone. There he saw a faint glow. Like the ember of a dead campfire, he nursed the spark until it began to grow.
In the homes below, the people of Gondor fell upon their faces and covered their ears. Mothers ushered their children to the supposed safety of their basements as brave men quailed and horses fled. Across the land, evil awoke in dark places and that which had been undone was remade.
The image in the stone was mesmerizing. It flickered many times, but always renewed. The vision grew ever brighter as a sense of awe grew in Frodo’s heart. Part of him, the part that was still the son of Samwise, feared and loathed the image. Frodo the Mighty, ruler of Middle Earth had no such fears. Finally, the image was plain to all. The Palantir glowed with a great red eye, wreathed in flame.

    Thanks Agent Miles.
I liked the sceptre with the skull of Saruman. It was original, and it gave a new heavy metal atmosphere to the LotR series. I'll go to bed with fun thoughts.

Tolkien only left a timeline for events that happened between the Silmarillian and The Hobbit. As you may know, the Men of Numenor defeated Sauron in the Second Age and took him prisoner to their island home. Over a period of many decades, Sauron deceived their king and tricked them into attacking the Valar. The Valar destroyed them and their island. Sauron’s physical form was also destroyed and his spirit escaped back to Mordor. So where was the One Ring when Sauron was in captivity? If he had worn the Ring, then his captors would surely have taken it from him. Even if he had simply hidden the Ring somehow on his person, then it would have been lost when the Valar destroyed the island. Sauron must have hid the Ring in Barad Dur. The Elves would have known that Sauron was without the One Ring, because they could once again use the Three. What if they formed a Fellowship to enter Barad Dur and destroy the One Ring? This might be an interesting story, involving young Elrond, Gil-Galad and many other wondrous characters that were only mentioned in passing. Just a story-tellers musings...
