So when you change the target from TW.exe to BI.exe you can play full campaigns with it, but no cutsom or historical battles right?

Unfortunately, I left my copy of BI in another country (really) and I was planning to get Total War: Eras just so I could get a new copy of BI and play an EB campaign with the better ai, although getting to play Medieval 1 and Shogun will be cool.

So the steps to install it are: install RTW = patch to 1.5 and then install Barbarian Invasion = patch BI to 1.6 then install EB right. Just wanted to make sure I do it right so corrections and suggestions would me much appreciated.

Thank you to all of you in advance.

Sounds right to me. All that's left is to change the shortcut target.

No way Oleo! I'm trying it right now, will report back when all the file transfers are done and I've attempted a battle.

    -edit-
Oh my sweet, sweet lord. It worked! Thank you Oleo! Appreciate this a great deal good man. Worked like a charm, the only problem was when I exited the game, I got this error message.

But that's just when exiting the game completely, no the battle or anything. But I seem to remember always getting weird error messages when I exit BI or BI mods. Might you, or anyone else, know what these are from? Oh and I did delete the map.rwm, just in case that was a possibility.

Anyways, your solution should be up in the EB FAQ. I'll post something there linking your post.

Isn't that the message you get when you don't add starting religious divisions in a BI mod?

For me that error message dissappeared when moving descr_regions_and_settlement_name_lookup.txt to the base folder as pointed out in the 6th point of the instructions.

EDIT: its weird though, I installed fresh on my XP-build and everything worked fine except for this error. After deleting map.rwm it still wasnt working, then deleting map.rwm from the base folder and descr_regions_and_settlement_name_lookup.txt from the campaign\barbarian_invasion folder the error disappeared all of a sudden.

    Have you tried deleting/renaming map.rwm in bi\data\world\maps\base?

Ah, I hadn't actually removed the file from the original folder, just copy pasted as the instruction didn't specify to remove it, just to copy. I'll delete the file in the original folder now and try again.

I am not so sure about the correct procedure yet, so trial and error does the trick for me at the moment.

Edit: Replied within 3 minutes, I might be checking the forums too often

Hehe, the Guild and EB have that power Oleo, no worries. Anyhoo, I removed it but it still gave the error. No big deal I suppose, it'll eventually be fixed. I'm just enjoying being able to play custom and campaign with the same shortcut and engine.

Oleo, I have followed your instructions and it works. However, I am not entirely sure whether I should use the Imperial or the regional one. They appear to be identical, but the regional campaign uses normal unit size, which I don't like.

So wait, you can't change th unit sizes if you play with bi.exe? Damn I always play on huge settings (I love big battles) so this will be pretty hard for me to swallow, but I'll get used to it I guess.

Oleo, trying the method you used I got the same error message as Wonderland, unfortunately I didn't have the luxury of getting it upon exit. So I received that error and it crashed (yes I have moved the descr_region_and_settlement file to the appropriate folder and have deleted map.rwn from base) Thanks though, apparently it works for others!

I guess you should use the other one then
Seriously, I have no idea whether there are other differences between the two, so I guess the imperial one should be fine.

For those with errors, I myself am having errors as well, I am trying to sort them out, hopefully I can get rid of them (or maybe someone else), its a nice puzzle anyway.

I cant figure out how to get rid of that descr_regions.txt error without losing custom battles, it just doesnt make sense to me..

So Ive been triying out an alternative way of getting custom battles working. Instead of using bi\data, we can also use RTW's data folder. Unfortunately there is a couple of errors that come with that (vanilla images instead of EB's) and Ill need someone with more modding skills to help me out how to get rid of them (I cant find the right files). First the procedure:

All you have to do is:

    - delete the world folder located at: your install folder\Data\world (it also works without doing this, but this will get rid of files that are not needed)

    - copy the contents of your install folder\EB\Data to your install folder\data and overwrite when asked.

    - make a shortcut with targetline: "......your install folder\RomeTW-BI.exe" -mod: -nm -show_err

    - del map.rwm inside your install folder\data\world\maps\base

All we have to figure out is whats not working properly and how to fix it.

    Problem 1: vanilla advisor portraits.
Problem 2: vanilla buttons for locating the general on the battlemap.
Problem 3: A lot of unnecessary RTW-files will remain in the rtw\data folder as I am not sure which can be discarded and which can not.
Problem 4: Some vanilla buildings, temple complexes, garrisons, governors buildings.

Now lets see if this works better than the Bi\data attempt.

The Gods might be against me. No way to play custom battles. I will wait the 0.81 version release...

You definitely can change the unit size. I play with BI on huge...

    Kick ass!

Oh yeah one final question, since I'm getting Total War: Eras will I just have to install RTW = Barbarian Invasion & patch 1.6 = and then EB = changing the target from Total War\TW.exe to BI.exe?

Please answer as soon as you can as I now have a job (yay!) and can afford to spend my hoarded money to get TW: Eras.

Does anyone actually have a resource that specifies the differences in the EXE when reading script files between RTW and RTW:BI? If so, I would be willing to do the manual labor of making a more realistic port to BI with the upcoming 0.81 but I do not know much anything about the RTW scripts or script engine. Although I do know that there are BI mods so somebody must know the differences!

Hey Oleo, I just installed 0.81 and did this method again. The custom battles work but now campaign doesn't start. It just goes back to the main menu. Any ideas as to why or how to fix it?

    -edit-
Both methods of starting a campaign don't work. Either directly from the main menu, choosing the EB main campaign, or going through the provincial campaign and choosing it. They both kick back out to the menu.

I tried the same thing and resorted to putting everything back to normal v.81 and just changing the shortcut. BI Campaigns now work. I don't play custom battles anyway so I'm not losing anything. I'm sure some bright modder will come along with a solution to the custom battles problem soon.

For those of you that have it working by some grace of God, when you boot up does the vanilla BI loading bar override the EB one? I'm no longer receiving texture errors for the campaign with 0.81 now it's nice enough to just send me back to the desktop without saying anything.

    Forget my previous suggestions:

    EB with BI:

    - have a proper 1.6 BI with EB

    - Make a shortcut with a targetline:

    Code:
    "your install folder\RomeTW-BI.exe" -mod:eb -nm -show_err
    - make a copy of
    Code:
    your install folder\eb\data\world\maps\campaign\imperial_campaign
and rename that copy to barbarian_invasion (you should now have two folders in that location)

    - make a copy of
    Code:
    your install folder\eb\data\text\imperial_campaign_regions_and_settlement_names.txt
and rename that copy to: barbarian_invasion_regions_and_settlement_names.txt.

    -delete
    Code:
    your install folder\eb\data\world\maps\base\map.rwm
Fire up EB through your newly created shortcut and you'll find campaign and custom battle working with BI (at least I did )

Just to clarify, if one doesn't want to mess with all those steps to get custom battles working, just adding -BI to the shortcut path will allow play on the BI exe, correct?

I've tried it, and it seems to be working by the way.

Awesome O! Works beautifully. Question though, if I already started a campaign with the BI.exe using the provincial campaign - EB main campaign method, is that the same as if I had used the main campaign right through the main menu? What's the difference? It's still using BI with all it's advantages right?

I keep getting to partially work with v0.80 and v0.81 the ../aerial_maps/trees/*.cas will not load for some reason. And I also noticed that for v0.81 the new empire view city structures were as of old. So obviously it just ignores like half of the EB scripts but all the units and their starting positions, the flags, main screen, interface load etc... It is angering me. I don't know why it magically works for everyone else!

I dont think there is a difference.

I must say though, Ive had 3 ctds so far with BI, it might be because of BI, it might be vista, it could even be a bad install. I am not sure.. I guess only time will tell.

Yeah, that would be strange if there was a difference between the two methods. Are your ctds repeatable? I had a couple playing .8 on BI, but I think they were more related to memory issues than the mod, as both times I could continue playing without moving characters around or anything. Perhaps vista is sucking up too much memory or something? Just an idea.
