Yeah you're right. So I'll go install it in my EB folder now.

Wait what? It says if I have Windows 7 or Vista the game must be installed into Users or something like /Games!!! No way not /Programs!! Is there a way on Windows 7 (or Vista) to solve this??

Yes. Reinstall Rome Total War and EB to a folder that you've created with the user you're logged in with. It cannot under any circumstances be in program files. The EB team does NOT support the game installed to \Programs, and as I've discovered with numerous people's problems, neither do I.

There's another way too, and it involves resetting the special permissions for the \Programs folder, but I don't recommend it.

Oh well I won't even be able to install Rome somwehere in Users since I already have other mods using it in Programs. Why is it only Windows 7 or Vista that need it in Users?

A new security paradigm is being used in Windows Vista and newer, due to the numerous problems people have had with XP due to malware. The programs directory now has special permissions on it, so that if any files are modified, the modified copies are placed in a special users directory. This is why my installer would sometimes fail: it was trying to modify files that were no longer in the programs directory.

Hello,

I'd like to know which files are modified with your installer, and if its possible to "extract" them from your installer.

i've noticed that your installer will not permit an installation where there is no eb folder, and even when tricking him into thinking its true by creating a dummy EB folder, he won't create any txt.files except for win conditions.

Thanks!

The installer contains very few files. Most files are modified in place to reduce the size of the installer and to make it compatible with other mods for EB. Any files that are modified are renamed with the prefix eb_before_bi_*. I have also made my installer specifically resistant to tricking, to help prevent buggy installations.

But if you'd like to try, you *can* crack open the installer with 7-zip to see what files are there. So doing that and checking for the prefix should tell you what's different. It also copies a bunch of stuff from the BI directory--you can see this list in the output window of the installer.

No better result with 7 zip... thanks tho.

Okay...I've checked through the forums, but I'm still not sure about this. Perhaps its a stupid question, but I'm going to ask it anyway. I already have EB 1.2 running very nicely on RTW 1.5, have read much about the naval invasions and improved AI and want to run EB on BI. Do I have to uninstall my current (RTW 1.5) EB?

No, of course not. You just need to run this EB+BI installer over your EB installation.

I should have done it much earlier, but better later then never ;)
So, thanks a lot, Ferromancer! I haven´t experienced a single crash, CTD or anything similar, since i´m using BI engine with your modification!

Hello,

I'm using a MacBook Pro (OS 10.6). Unfortunately, my computer won't run the .exe--it keeps saving it as a .txt file. How might I run the file?

It might actually be saving the file okay, but then you'd have to change the extension back to exe and see if it runs in Parallels on the mac. I don't own a mac and I don't know anybody who does, so I can't help you beyond that.

Ah, okay. Sorry to bother you further, but is there a way to get the files without using the .exe, to just kinda extract text files and place them where I want them?

Nope. For multiple reasons, the installer modifies files in place:
1) Some of these files are gigantic, while the actual changes are relatively small, bloating the size of the installer significantly.
2) There are many mods out there that make many modifications to these files, so there are conflicts. My installer is in theory compatible with any other minimod, so long as other mods are installed first.
3) Related to the above, it's very difficult to keep track of changes both within my own mod, with newer versions of EB, updates to bugfix forum, and newer versions of other people's mods. Keeping track of changes is very tedious and makes me very cranky.
4) Why not simply patch the files using a diff installer? Not only are people making many changes to the same file, they could even happen in the same location of a file. I am not willing to take that kind of risk.

In short, the NSIS installer copies files from the BI folder, I call a .net dll to modify most changes in place, and finally, the installer unpacks a small number of files which are very unlikely to be changed by anybody else.

So, you will have to use parallels or some other virtualization software to install BI and to also run my installer, since it won't run on the mac natively. If you have a relatively new Mac, you could also dual boot windows if you wanted to.

EDIT: I posted a reply to the EB for Mac thread in case they would like to work with me for a BI installer.

So I downloaded the installer and tried installing the mod, but when I got to the point where I'm supposed to choose the place of install, I got a message saying that I am running vista and the installer won't be able to continue if BI is installed under program files. I don't have BI installed under program files but the installer still won't work. Is there anything I can do to get it to work?

Make sure that when you run the installer, the destination folder is the same as the folder for BI.exe. It's not smart enough to scan your hard drive for your installation of Barbarian Invasion. You're seeing that message because the default install assumes you've installed it to program files under windows XP.

I will be installing this in the next few days and just read up on the process...So, all I have to do is Install EB over the regular game..then use this installer for on BI? I'm purchasing the RTW Gold Pack and won't be installing them in Program Files (as I have Windows 7). Does this mean BI will still take place at a later date as the vanilla copy, but just have the increased AI? Or will this effect the entire process, make BI just like running EB on the non expansion?

Thank You

If RTW gold contains BI, all you have to do is (1) install RTW, (2) Install BI, (3) Install the latest patch for BI, (4) install EB, (5) Install patches for EB, (6) Install any mods you like for EB, and the last step is to run my installer.

EB running on BI will start at the same date. All features in BI except for religion and schiltrom are implemented by my installer. If you don't like some of the features, you can turn them off when you run the installer.

Religion wasn't implemented due to conflicts with the four-seasons system of EB (religion would spread way too quickly) among other reasons. Schiltrom was buggy and the AI never used it properly.

For more information see the FIRST POST of this thread, as it contains a full, updated, description.

Thanks, I'll see if this works as I hadn't installed the BI patch before.

Update: Works now!

Well when I try to select the folder where BI is installed, the button remains grayed out and it won't let me change the destination folder.

I installed the installer for BI, but when I run the game, I am unable to play the EB Main Campaign ("Please select an item from this list") and when I quit the game I get the following error message: Script error in eb/data/world/maps/campain/barbarian_invasion/descr_strat-txt at line 1, column2:
Expected campain or battle map type

Someone solved the problem by following those (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showt...13#post1433613 instructions but they did not solve the problem...

Do you guys know how to solve my problem?

The install button remains greyed out until you select a directory with a valid EXE for BI. An unpatched or cracked exe will not work. And you definitely should be able to change folders (just tested on my win7 x64 box).
