Thread: 20 years ago, in Yemen...

I was hit by a rocket or a mortar shell.

Working for the Charity Médecins Sans Frontière (Doctors Without Border) as a Logistic Officer during the Civil War in 1994, I was hit. Then, it is history.

From then, every day was a bonus, a gift. Enjoy life.

So I'll assume you are the guy in the orange stretcher thing? I guess it's either that or that guy (girl?) in the floral pants.

I'm glad you've had 20 years of gifts, Brenus. May you have many more.

Jaw in 3 parts, arm and wrist broken, retina damage, lots and lots of little bits on body, legs...
It happened during the push from the North in Aden. I just evacuated all valuable things from the office and retreated in the hotel rented by ICRC so, after having bullets flying around, I felt quite safe.
A colleague just arrived from Djibouti with material for Humanitarian Actions AND bottle of Red Vine, saucisson, cheeses and other things.
So all the staff from various organisations (ICRC, UNHCR, journalists) were in my room, chatting and so and so.
When all was drunk and eaten, all the them left except the colleague from Djibouti. I was laying on the floor, left arm on the bed. The last thing I remember is him telling me he will do the washing-up, I still see him going in the bathroom then, I can't even say black, but it wouldn't be accurate. I was, then I was not.

Did you hear it coming? A whistle is a mortar, a hiss an RPG and a low-flying jet sound is a rocket

Glad you came out of it. Also impressed with the organization you worked for, I like those guys

I'm glad that you point out that you approve of doctors who put money aside and go work in the worlds worst hell holes.

Kind of disturbing that you felt it to be something you show approval of, though. What do you think the rest of us do? Throw stones at Doctors Without Borders when we happen upon them on the street?

No, smarty pants, the point is that he worked with them, and you or I didn't, which makes him more impressive than you or me. And I would also wager that the vast majority of users on this board do not know who DWB is, although they probably don't come to the BR much. I am sorry you feel I gave TMI. Now excuse me, I have to go take a crap
