Default Technologies in Empire Total War

Lets start with a nasty military Tech!

Okay so Robert Boyle(25 January 1627 – 30 December 1691) was the first Britisher to discover White Phosphorus. But his countrymen were the first to weaponize it (the Irish). WP is believed to have been first used by Fenian arsonists in the 19th century in the form of a solution of WP in carbon disulfide. When the carbon disulfide evaporated, the WP would burst into flames, and probably also ignite the highly flammable carbon disulfide fumes. This mixture was known as "Fenian fire" and allegedly was used by disgruntled itinerant workers in Australia to cause delayed destruction of shabby sleeping quarters.

white phosphorus was first discovered in 1669 so its portent for the game is evident.

Maybe a tech item. Certainly matches. But others had it too; Germans, Swedes & Dutch…

Some others; We have glimpses of the Green Revolution with Farms and Exploding shells I believe make an appearance…they should. As well as those we already see listed; Platoon Firing, Square Formation, Fougasse.

Anyone care to speculate on others they may see or hope to see?

Wiki has some decent starting info on technology that you might be able to research during the game. Maybe the Thresher and Automatic Flour Mill could increase agricultural income. More than likely they won't be included, but this is a decent place to start.

They are already in the game. See Tosa's first screenshot.

Yep! We know Steam Power (imagine that ) and rockets are in. Rifles are there. Don’t know about the Ferguson Rifle yet though. Something was said a few months back about automatic firing weapons though.
Larger cartridge boxes would seem to be a tech discovery… it isn’t like we can draw conclusions or use common sense on our own.

Who knows, maybe guano will be a major discovery at some point…

The indian rockets with sword blades attached to the end, so that when they fell from the sky they would spin and slice up the enemy. Maybe post mughal though...

    Okay, history buffs.

Is smokeless powder in this period or is it after this period?

That's the only tech wonder I know of near this time frame.

That said I am curious to see artillery techs, basically improvements from simple small cannons of 1500's to deadly weapons of 17-1800's.

Smokeless powder was introduced in the 1880's

The main artillery technology change happened in the mid 1700's with the drilling of gun barrels instead of casting them around a clay core. It made for more accurate guns with less windage IIRC.

Henry Shrapnel developed the spherical case shell in the late 18th century although it was not adopted by the British Army until 1803 or there about.

Now here is something to invest in!

Especilly if you have a big naval power for an enemy!

    The Submarine.

Those are some early dates there!

So Fulton returned to the US and built a steamship…

Personally I want to see technologies relating to the most important aspects of the era: hats and facial hair.

For instance research that allows your officer's moustaches to be 20% bushier than those of the enemy. This in turn should result in a morale bonus for your troops and a morale penalty for the enemy. And it should give your guys more hitpoints.

Hate to break facts to you beanie but havn't seen a ton of ridiculous moustaches in the videos for ETW, i've barely seen a proper wig other then George Washington (who looks a little pudgy.)

    Of course I'd know.....if I had officers....in a....

    That’s too easy!

Haven’t you ever heard of collecting stump water at midnight with a dead cat?

    That’ll grow hair on a billiard ball…

Failing that you may wish to consult a left-handed Scottish Witch….

I am sure that Boyle, Wren, & Newton would have done the same.

I'm so sad now . The hats and facial hair was really the only reason I was going to purchase the game, guess I'll be cancelling my pre-order.

I heard that rubbing the juices from an adult toad on your upper lip every night before bed works wonders.

If that doesn't work then you have to find yourseld a paticularly long haired doormouse, kill it, and staple it to your face. After a few days it should become a wondroues moustache!

For proper gentlemanly muttonchop sideburns the best thing to do is to buy some actual mutton, leave it out in the sun until it becomes hairy and (you guessed it) shave off the hair and glue it to yourself.

Hope this helped those who are facial hair impared. (I personally could not grow a moustache or beard to save my life. I am forever doomed to have the face of a sixteen year old, and always be checked for ID in pubs.)

I'm curious to see how bayonet technology progresses. I suspect that could/will be one of the more major battlefield advances players will be striving for (I know I will).

You mean from Plug to Lug as quick as you can!

The English and Germans were already using the ring bayonet prior to the start of the game. The Frogs didn’t get around to it until 1703.

Do you think we will have to waist time on the ring bayonet?

Something invented by a Scots may if I might add, even if he was in British Service…

I bet we do have to have ring bayonets simply so CA can extend the tech tree a little. Hopefully we can be pastthem in a couple of turns however.
