other nations trying to colonize?

Has anyone of you ever seen an other european nation(i.e. Portugal, Italian Republics, etc. trying to invade or expand into India/America)? I'm just curious, cause it would be great.

This has been discussed many times already. Only those European nations already on ground will attempt to expand. And that is just barely.

i.e. Portugal might try to invade India with units recruited there. It will most likely fail, as it can't build any decent units there (unless it lives long enough and is smart enough to build a military governor's mansion).

France, Spain & GB might fight the Native Americans. Don't expect anything major though.

The no-naval-invasion bug is supposed to be fixed in the upcoming patch. Then we might actually see some expansion into other theaters.

Try this in your campaign - in the early years, take 1 or 2 Indian (or even american) provinces and give them to someone you want to fight later on. Then just leave them be for a few decades. I gave Texas to the Dutch and they're having a major war with Mexico.

You're forgetting diplomacy though-in my game as the Marathas (i'd expanded into South America) the Ottamans have Florida and Sweden has Cuba. Weird.

I've generally found that if you give the would-be colonists a kick-start (i.e. give them another province or two) they'll usually take it from there.

I not sure how they did it - but somehow Russia has Goa and Ceylon in my campaign with Genoa.
They may have traded Ceylon ( I played with UP once and the Russians asked me several times for it )
BUT they are at war with Protugal, so what happened with Goa?

Maybe the Russians have clandestinely developed naval invasions

Yeah, in one of my previous campaigns I've had Russia get a foothold in America

I think they "aquired" one of hte states either through bribery or as a spoil of war or sommat and expanded from there. I certainly never saw any armies invade but for sure they had a "colony" in south america. Not for long, mind you - I soon relieved them of their American territories

Portugal traded Goa to another nation not at war with Russia, and that nation traded it to Russia.

OR-

Portugal and Russia made peace with Goa as part of the agreement, then went to war again.

OR-

Marathas took Goa and sold it to Russia.

Yep. At the current time, no AI is doing naval invasions, but they will do province trades. I've seen the Maratha Confederacy with Martinique before, and Ottoman Newfoundland once, plus there's the (often) early trade where France gives up Martinique and French Guyana to the Thirteen Colonies in exchange for New England and Maine...

And why should a nation ask for goa, just to sell it to the Russians?!

The big question is: Why are they in war at all?! Both are far away from each other and in my game, none of both had an ally, so why?!

3.That might be it, but why should they sell Goa, and not another one?! The Russians may have asked for it, but still: what did they get in return?! Russia is still poor and landlocked in a way, because they are in war with Sweden and the Ottomans; Marathas are prosperous

Anyway, Russia has traded both Regions to Austria now, what seems really smart because the russian trade between India and its homeland was raided anyway

Liberator, I don't mean to offend but I have NEVER seen the AI trade provinces.

I'm begining to think these "wierd" expansion posts are frauds, or the player had too much to drink the night before.

Of course I admit I'm only acting on the fact that I have never seen it happen. Is it late in the game that this occurs?

Province trades can occur at any time. I haven't really seen any inter-AI trades (may be once), but get pestered often by the AI for trading provinces which they need that I have .

Well, its the third campaign I play and the first in which I have seen it.

I checked some savegames (because I was surprised that Goa and Ceylon suddenly belong to Austria), I guess it was arround 1750 when Russia first got to India.

If Goa would have gone to UP, I maybe wouldn't have thought much about it, but Russia really puzzled me

From my experience, these things generally happen later-game (ie: after about 1750). Also, I've only ever seen it happen in traditionally 'colonial' provinces-so the European colonies in America and India can be traded, but the Marathan territories dont.
