I'd take grenade spamming over the nonsense of the instant death through a wall Rail-Gun antics of the original Red Faction. You move along and some git has killed you from another room before you got time to react. Whoever decided being killed from a distance, behind the safety of several walls was fun needs a good kicking. Utter nonsense.

I think many games are ruined at higher levels and especially towards the end game by the designers' reliance on heavy weapon wielding lunatics in high numbers having stupid accuracy and the ability to kill you just like that. No-one wants a 'die-quickload-die-quickload-die-quickload-kill one annoying enemy-quicksave-die-quickload-repeat until won game/gave up the will to live' scenario. Ruins the pacing and enjoyment.
