    Thumbs up Interesting Head Gear

Hi guys. In some of the most recent pics from the sneak peaks thread I see some of the Germanic bodyguard unit wearing what appears to be a wooden helmet? Am I correct in this or is it in fact bronze or iron?. I read a post from another forum way back where they were talking about a find in Denmark of a helmet like this. Pretty cool idea to incorporate it into the mod if so. Either way it looks awesome.

Yes, it is the wooden helmet found in a Denmark bog:

Here you can see it better:

    Simple but effective protection. Awesome.

Can we be sure that it was really effective? An axe blow should easily split it, since axes are designed primarily for woodcutting anyway. Maybe it was ceremonial?

Do you prefer to get an axe hit on your skull instead with this?

While I agree with you that an axe could probably split the helm. Some protection is always better than no protection. In fact I believe this helm was found with a bone arrowhead embedded in it which would otherwise have been embedded in someones skull. If this is all that is readily available....ill take the helm over the arrow

Indeed, iron was quite rare in the germanic lands so they had to improvise.

Most of the iron equipment(swords, mail, etc. ) could be afforded only by the wealthy and it was imported from the celts but this happened later.
That's why for the late version you'll see more celtic and roman influence in their equipment(Coolus helmet, celtic and roman mail and so on), but not for the early version even if it's an elite(bodyguard) unit.

A heavy blow from an axe would cut through a bronze or iron helmet anyway, and even if it didn't, the wearer would be concussed from the blow in any case. No protection is perfect. Helmets deflect glancing or light hits.

It would probably be quite effective at dealing with most blows, but be much less durable than it's metal equivalent. A bit like modern day Bicycle Helmet or the Mycenean Boar tusk Helmet. Sure It will break when you take a good swing at it but for all it's worth it distributed the force away from your head, at least mostly ;)

He is refering to the Bronze age Mycenaean "Dendra Armour", and similar findings. Te Mycenaenas used helmets covered with peices of Boar tusks as protection. There have been multiple examples recovered, and they can also be seen on some art from the time:

A quick google search for Dendra Armour will give you more than enough to read and look at!

Actually headgear like can be a core piece of people's identity and even the government has to respect that. At least here in Czech Republic it does and issues official ID cards with it:

is there something I'm missing regarding the whole "let's wear spaghetti strainers on our heads" motif? or is he seriously lacking in dignity? or is it, as part of me suspects, an FSM related act of trolling?

Is it what we call a bad id ?

I wonder if he ever tried to board a plane with it. At least he can safely walk his outrageous self everywhere inside the schengen area.

EDIT : I just had a look at my avatar and realised I shouldn't judge him so severely....

suddenly, it makes a whole lot of sense.

OK, so I can't read or understand Czech (and I'm leery of translators), but I think I can figure out what happened from here:

-dude walks into the DMV equivalent in the Czech republic to get an ID,of course wearing a strainer.
-those guys tell where where to go (not in a good way). Partly because of the stupid headdress, but just as likely as it hides his hair mostly (a hindrance to IDing people).
-he argues that as FSM is his religion and the strainer is a symbol of it, he should have the right to wear it as a Sikh does his turban or similar. This being to demonstrate the double standards regarding ID laws.
-eventually, he (at least partly) succeeds, creating the funny mug I see before me.

I've seen similar stories from the US, though nothing this brazen--in a good/comical way.

EDIT: @Alcibiade: you are wearing a practical war helmet, which could save your life. the guy is wearing a strainer. you may judge him as you please
