...the smell of Garlic...

Yes that's right and so fast that I didn't have time to question him over the historical accuracy of clansmen wearing kilts...

This evening there was quite a commotion, then a sound akin to a cannon elephant running down the stairs, followed by a retching sound. My neighbour above, I live in a flat (apartment), had apparently taken dislike to my wife's cooking...

The chicken was frying away nicely, wonderful aromas permeating the air. When the angry fellow was knocking the door and informing me that our food in fact "stinks". Mrs Caravel enquired as to what the gentleman was referring to. I replied: "he said our food stinks". To which my wife tranformed into a she devil and unleashed a torrent of abuse in her native tongue, which I then obliged to translate. The angry gentleman then retired to his room (wavering, losing badly, fleeing).

The vapours had apparently been rising up through his window, to which Mrs Caravel had the ideal solution (close your ******* window then!!!). I proceeded to assure the gentlman that the window would indeed be closed in future, and that I perfectly understood his dislike of garlic (as I also had a strong dislike of haggis and kilts).

Now the question is this: Is the north almost completely ignorant of ethnic cuisine? Do they have chinese, indian, thai, italian etc restuarants up there? Is garlic that offensive to some people?
