The Future of Total War modding discussion - Medieval 2 Total War
Earlier this year, prompted by a thread from Dol Guldur this forum held host to a variety of topics discussing the future of modding the Total War games, which resulted in several changes and new ideas on how to best support the modding community. Recently, Dol Guldur has once again provoked us to put our thinking caps on by providing some thoughts on the characteristics of a good modder.
Now, with Medieval 2 just about to consume us, we'd like to spark up these wider discussions again in order to try and take as much of our knowledge with us into the new game. Some of starting topics are:
Lessons from Rome in mod development and team management
How to best transform new modders into valuable members?
'Mod packs' and feature mods - vital ingredients or a waste of time?
As before, these discussions are open for all - as conversations develop and tangential issues arise feel free to spin them off into other threads or start up new discussions of your own.
The Lordz Napoleonic Total War 2 Multiplayer Campaign
Following on from their release of the Battle of Borodino last month and the first part of the Waterloo pack below, the Lordz are taking NTW2 to the next level and have announced they are testing a new format of online multiplayer campaign. We eagerly await the latest updates on this exciting development for multiplayer Total War.
Chamber of Records
The Chamber of Records - a cross-platform site for all Lord of the Rings modifications - has provided a treat for Total War Tolkien fans by hosting two Total War interviews - the first with Lord of the Rings Total War creator wlesmana and the second a podcast with Middle Earth Total War mod-leader Encaitar.
Visit to the Medieval 2 Total War Development Studio
CA Australia recently very kindly extended an invitation to visit the Medieval 2 Total War development studio to me later this month in order to discuss possible future modding support. Not only is this a great gesture from CA to the modders and the online community, it will hopefully give us a chance to get 'under the hood' of the new game and see what makes it tick. More news on this as it becomes available.

Mod Recruitment
Modding in a team can be an awesome, exciting experience allowing its members to develop a mod far greater than the sum of those it could individually.
The brightest, most innovative mods today are being produced by teams of modders - each working and developing in their own specialities – even where a mod is particular brainchild of a solo modder, they will often want help in specific areas or through lack of time. Teams can be great places to learn skills from the masters of the field, get to know new people and make those vital contacts with modders who you can then interest in your own modding ideas.
If you're keen to work with any mod team just contact their leader and see if you can help out.
**********Are you a modeller?*********
There is a huge shortage of modellers within the community and virtually every mod team desperately needs more (or even one!) as modelling is required to make any significant changes to units within the game. If you are a competent modeller you would be welcome in pretty much any project in which you had an interest, and you would be able to make sure that any personal project of your own could be completed and fail because of this lack.
The community strongly encourages everyone able to take an interest in modelling and you'll find several guides available to help on the Scriptorium.
The only programme currently able to create models for RTW is 3DSmax, however it is $$$ :(. A free 30 day download is available - however that's not nearly enough time to get useful results. You can extend the length of your trial by uninstalling it when not in use. Also, there are means by which models can be converted from the now-unavailable Gmax into 3DSMax, so if one team member has 3DSmax he can convert models from several different team members.
