M2TW has been out about a month now so I was wondering if all you old MTW players have preferred it to the 2002 original or not?

I enjoyed the combat system in MTW much better. Plus MP was supported slightly more. Of course it's always been neglected, but less so back then.
As Zhou Enlai is reported to have said of the impact of the French revolution, it's too early to tell.

Prefer M2TW. There's a better rock-paper-scissors balance in this, heavy shock infantry made spears completely irrelevant in the first one... In this you actually have to field spears.

I like having the decent animations. They really help the game to go along. Plus the fact of Agents cant move across the entire map in one turn..That really annoyed me.
My Vote goes to M2:TW.
Sorry, missed out an "of". I think it's more a case of me needing my second cup of coffee than of you needing more alcohol.Originally Posted by BigTex
Back on topic, if CA fixes the "passive AI bug", I'll vote for M2TW. But right now, it's made my English campaign too dull for me to want to persist with.
Voted for Medieval 2: Total War.
Im not one of these new kiddies to gaming. Hell I still go back to Ultima 6,7 and 8 when I want a RPG. Screw Oblivion. But I genuinely believe that Rome was one hell of a leap forward for the Total War series and that MTW2 only improves upon that excellence further.
And lets face it... it's damned gorgeous to![]()

IMO M2:TW is the better of the two just because of the graphics theres just such a huge leap from M:TW the battles are like watching a film. But the things is a lot of features that were brilliant in M:TW and made that game have been dropped so theres a bit of a trade of between gameplay and graphics. So im just hoping that some of the patches might add some of the old stuff back into the game which take M2:TW to an even hiogher level.
MTW2 is a combination of the medieval setting with a Rome engine. It's a dreamboat for me. I spent all of my time in Rome trying to find a civ that had a good sword unit, just because I was a bit haunted by my medieval side. Now, I'm driven by my desire to find a good sword unit with a civ that also has a good bow unit and a good spear unit... I need all three, since I'm more of an infantry guy.
Anyways, MTW2 despite all of the whining and griping that has characterized it's release for me so far, has been a great experience. I'll probably be playing it 'till the next Total War installment comes out (At which time I will rip the modem out of the wall to keep from compulsively reading all of the subsequent gripes that seem to follow every game that comes out).

Well if we consider just the tactical side and forget the campaign map, the vote would have to go with MTW.
Not quite. The v1.1 patch made spears irrelevant, in v1.0 the gameplay was far superior and v1.1 also produced the cav swipe. In M2TW there appears to be a legacy of the patched gameplay of v1.1, even hobilars can decimate spears in a frontal charge so we now have the swords of v2.01 combined with the cav of v1.1. Combine this with the obvious faction imbalances that still exist, I would argue that a patch is desperately needed for M2TW to come anywhere near to MTW v1.0. I doubt that the faction imbalances will even be considered let alone addressed since it is far less noticeable in SP, where upgraded units are the norm and armies are rarely equal.Prefer M2TW. There's a better rock-paper-scissors balance in this, heavy shock infantry made spears completely irrelevant in the first one... In this you actually have to field spears.
After a month of battle testing I still can't decide whether I actually want to buy this game. When the Mediaeval Total Realism Mod is released I may be swayed but that will not catch on in the MP lobby and I have only ever been a token SP player so until a decent patch that fixes the known bugs and balances the factions for MP is released I remain disappointed

God, yes. The whining has totally overshadowed the release of MTW2 for me as well.Originally Posted by PaulTa

Well hate to say it and looking a bit old..but MTW played better...so I would go with that at present. Much more of a challenge....and AI worked! lol
Campaign map is the best so far on MTW2....if the AI worked properly..
Battles could rock again too many issues at present to give it the thumbs up.
But it CA fix MTW2..and spruce it up a bit...then clearly this will be the better game..
But at present MTW is better.........IMO
So I await the patch/patches!
this is hardly fair.
i mean when mtw was released there was NOTHING like it before (excepting shogun of course)
imagine if you will, if m2tw was a new game and medieval wasnt released. it would totally kick ass right now as being a "revolutionary" game. bah.
i think its better but could use some more improvements.

only if he could push his way off and fight you
Im sorry, Im sorry, Im not sure
Getting this off my chest, the story ends.
Only with a constant retreat and re-charge... Which the AI doesn't know how to do. So I don't care that it can happen, because I'm never ever ever EVER going to play against another person.Originally Posted by Orda Khan
