Default Provincial Titles Project for Vanilla (from the Mediaeval Auctoriso team)

Introducing the Provincial Titles Project for Vanilla
    (or PTPV for short)

Alot of people (including ourselves) were pretty unhappy when we heard that the provincial titles from MTW1 would not be included in MTW2. So when the rumor became official so long ago during the summer months we immediately sat down to begin brainstorming how we would bring the titles system back to MTW2 and more importantly how we would improve it and thus within a day of CA's infamous announcement the PTP was born. The project has evolved considerably since then as more information trickled out from CA and more ideas trickled in from our various members but we've finally got a solid setup working in game.

Credit for this goes to Alpaca for actually doing the work to get the script working correctly and efficiently in game, Solo for doing the research on the various titles and heraldry, Conn for his expertise on the British Isles, and the rest of team for their various overused adjectives of encouragement.

Here Ill be showcasing a nearly complete version of the PTPV which will serve as the basis for the much more extensive system we'll be incorporating into MA. The PTPV should be released publicly for download relatively shortly.

The process of appointing a title begins by opening the "city info" scroll within the settlement scroll. The advisor will pop up asking you whether or not you want to appoint a new ruler.

If you select the "show me" button then the advisor will take you to the list scroll that displays all of your generals. Choose the general you want and press the check mark to confirm your selection.

Congratulations! You've successfully appointed a new ruler although the new appointment won’t become official until the following turn. Your character gains a 'future ruler' trait to signify his impending new title.

At any time before the appointment becomes official if you have second thoughts it is a simple click of the button to cancel everything with no ill effects.

Your general now gains the new title along with a substantial improvement to his loyalty. The trait gives the gameplay bonuses while the ancillary displays the coat of arms of the province.

Later on if you feel that another general is better deserving of the title you can change it using the same process however be prepared for a negative backlash from the original holder of the title. Note also that if you lose the province to another faction then your general will also lose his title so be careful to keep your generals' property safe.

As you can see the system is very simple yet very powerful. As I said this is a nearly complete version so you can expect some minor changes in the final release. The vanilla version of the PTP will be ready for download relatively soon so keep your eyes open for a more definite announcement from us concerning the actual date.

The final MA version of the PTP will be much extensive incorporating such elements as varying reactions from your generals to gaining/losing a title depending on their other traits. Some generals will react very favorably and become more loyal while other more egotistical generals might react with a drop in loyalty feeling themselves now even more capable of challenging your rule. Overall the system will be much less straightforward and require a bit of forethought before simply handing out titles like free food samples at the supermarket. It will also give you the ability to appoint other titles that dont require giving away provinces.

    Nice work.
It is a subject I am very interested in.
There are so many possible ways to enrich and expand gameplay with custom Traits and Ancillaries.
Yourself and another modder both are working on different but similar mods in the area of heraldry and Titles.
I think it may be good for you to both team up, share a common interest and pool your knowledge to create a mod that become a staple part of many Mtw2 projects.
My first post @ the org.

All is said in Shifty's post, this release will be a quick overview of a feature we are working on for our mod, so we are more or less planning to enhance it for MA in priority (fitting our ideas, list of faction and map, seems logical). Still we wanted to release something for people missing that feature from MTW (where you could choose who to give it).
That said the projects have not much in common, I honestly don't see where any common work would start at this point.

I know everyone hates being asked this, but you seem to be quite far along with this project. Do you have any idea of when it will be open to the public?

Which one ? MA or the mini mod ?

(The second is planned for sunday, we're just adjusting a few things but it's 95% done right now).

It was the mini-mod I was more concerned about at this time. Sounds good, should be ready for when I get back from holidays then!

This is super sweet... really nice work...

Do you think there will ever be a way to increase or decrease a province's public order depending on whether or not the title holder is actually goverening the settlement in the province?

Another nice touch would be making the title be inherited by the general's eldest son. Thus once the the player chose a general then he is kind of locked that title to that family line. Of course the player could still grant the title to whomever he pleased but not only would the title holder gain a negative trait but you could give a disinherited trait to everyone in that family line and make it genetic so that striping a family of it's title could after the loyalty of a whole familiy of generals...

Sorry.. got a bit carried away there... Really, really good mod... Great as it is..

I'm keeping my eye on this project.

One small question: if one has a different "trait" file (like Medifix and the like), it will be overwritten by your mod, correct?

    @Bob
Thanks. While i dont know enough to say whether or not those ideas would work (Alpaca could tell you) they are some very interesting ideas. They wont be included with the Vanilla version of the PTP (we wanted to keep that version pure and simple) they're something to consider for the MA version.

    @Faenaris
Yes it would be overwritten. But I do believe that Alpaca will be including instructions in the readme for integrating this mod with others so it shouldnt be a problem as long as you dont mind doing a bit of cutting and pasting.

Ok this is GREAT. I cant wait to see the code. Cant you release template for this script earlier?
M2TW scripting looks much more interesting now.

Nope. Sorry. But its not like youll have to wait that long. We are planning to release this sometime around this weekend.

From what I understand MTW2 scripting while not as powerful as one would have hoped is still an improvement from RTW. The limitations mostly come from the relatively limited conditionals that the script can check.

Thanks for the answer. Fiddling with .txt files isn't a problem for me.

Well, we're currently testing it (already solved a few problems that cropped up). I'd like to give it at least 24 hours so that we can make sure we don't have too many problems in the release version.

Anyways, a problem that I noticed when playing with it a bit is that there's no easy way to tell if a settlement currently has a ruler, or which boni the associated trait gives, but I have something in mind for an update on the matter (although that might not make it into the vanilla version)...

LordBula: The code is fairly complex, and I removed the comments in the release version because they'd have blown it even more out of proportion. So figuring out what each thing does may be a bit hard.
I guess I could write a tutorial for it, but only if there's some public demand for that, not if only two or three people are interested ;)
However, every vanilla mod should be able to incorporate this quite easily by just copying&pasting the parts we changed.

On a more general note: In the current version, the campaign script for the PTP has 12.5k lines, plus the other stuff, all in all roughly 25k or so (although I guess I could save 2-3k lines if I removed some stuff that is almost superfluous). You really don't want to edit that by hand...
We might release our script generator but I don't currently feel comfortable with that because it's a dev tool: you need to make a few settings in the script. I'm not too prone to support it, either, as I already spend enough time on that stuff without people asking me about a difficult-to-use program.

They are currently disabled because in our opinion, it kills immersion to have Muslim rulers called "Earl of Essex" or something like that. You can add them easily by opening your campaign script file and adding:
    Code:
    set_counter allow_provincial_titles 1
    Do this right after:
    Code:
    declare_counter allow_provincial_titles

Just be aware that this was intended for catholics rulers. Because, of course, three different systems (titles & heraldry) would have to be made for catholic, orthodox and muslim factions. Since this is merely a preview of the complete MA feature we've designed it for a catholic scenario.

Dont bother alpaca. I only wanted to see how you add traits to characters not knowing character names.
I see how you do this now.
    Code:
    console_command give_trait this ruler_caen 1
Was operator this present in RTW or is this new one in M2TW?
I have never seen it before.

Not sure if it was in R:TW, I heard of it from somebody else. No idea who found it out tbh
